Hi all, this is my first posting to this forum, I am a fairly recent convert to the Noble mark

I see there are some South African Noble owners out there, I hope igeorge and turbocup and any others can help me with this info.

Now we all know that the Noble is built in PE and shipped to the UK to have the drive-train installed. However, I heard that they were now shipping engines to SA and the complete car was being manufactured there, at least for the SA market destined cars anyways.

But I was talking to a salesman on the phone from the Noble dealer in Jhb and he told me that the cars were actually being imported from Noble in the UK. This seems daft to me because that would mean that the car is shipped from PE to UK, the engine bolted in, then shipped back to SA again, which then gets the mandatory 40% import duty slapped onto the price of the car. This just seems unbelievable to me and I was sure the guy was wrong about this but he insisted this was the case. I was also quoted R850g for a M400. Is this right?

From reading your posts when you bought your cars, you picked them up from the PE factory fully assembled? Did the price you pay include any type of import duty? Surely seeing as the car is essentially built in SA, SA drivers should be able to get the best prices for them. Seeing as the current price for a M400 in the UK is £55k (?), it seems absurd that in SA it is the equiv of about £75k!

Any help with this info would be appreciated!

For the SA market only, Nobles are fully assembled in the PE factory and distributed locally through Lazarus Motor Co.. We play no part in the manufacture of these cars.

Simon, thanks for your response. The person who I spoke to was from Lazarus. Am I correct in assuming that the info I was given was not accurate and in fact these cars are not imported? I did not think this was the case.

If they are not imported, can you comment on the HUGE price difference? If anything, the cars should be cheaper than their UK counterparts, yet they are £20k dearer.... eeek!

Hi Stormrider

I think its just a case of what the market will bear...At a UK price of 55K and exchange rate of R11.27-1 Noble should cost R620K;with 40% duties R870k.

Noble M400 is 825K in SA.M3 CSL is 940K.GT2 is R2 685 000...

Do the same comparison on these and tell me what you think.

Hi turbocup. What confuses me is the fact that because the car is built in SA, there should be NO 40% duty added or any type of import tax payable. It seems insane that Noble in the UK still have to pay for the car to be shipped to the UK as well, yet can still sell it for £20k cheaper.

Porsches and the like are imported into SA and therefore hit with the duty, so those examples will always be insanely priced.

(btw, the subject of how the government protects the SA motor industry with these ridiculous import duties, whilst the motor industry blatantly rips off the SA car buying public is another debate on its own... at least it has come down from the 120% it used to be)

I'd blame your government then. The S.A. vendor whilst appearing to be scalping, wouldn't be able to get away with it were it not for those tarriffs.

Hi Stormrider

I agree with turbocup about pricing wrt to what the market will bear. I'm not sure who is getting the benefit - Hi-Tec or Lazarus or Noble, but Lazarus have to provide the service backup, with a small number of umits sold.

Also, are you sure about the 55K, I think it might be a bit more with options.

I cannot comment on SA pricing, since I'm not familiar with the new-car tax situation there, or how exchange rates affect the list price. For each of the different countries in which we sell, the importer sets the price, based on many different criteria. However, we do always try to maintain the price parity between our cars vs our rivals in different regions.

If you want to know more, you'll need to speak to Lazarus, who have set this price.

Simon, thanks for the info, and I appreciate all the responses so far, its just that my confusion actually started with the salesman from Lazarus telling me that the car was imported from the UK and had the import duty on the price. I was certain at the time this was wrong info, and it now sounds like it was.

I am left with no other option than to accept the fact that the Lazarus salesman was either fibbing or had been misinformed. Which one is anybody's guess...

If it's a mistake then I'm sure they'll be glad when you tell them. If it's a lie then Lazarus should be kicked into touch, PRONTO. They're not doing Noble any favours either way.

Well I guess it may hang on the definition of foreign car according to the regs too.

Why not just ask them outright?

give Colin Lazarus a call on 012 678 0000. He is the owner and will be able to help you.

Drive a M400 at altitude and then test the opposition.
You cant have normal aspiration at our altitude.

Only a PORSCHE 996 Turbo @R1.8 million plus options and maybe a GT2 at R2.4 million compare.

You can fight the system by not buying cars, but unfortunatly it won't do much. We all know that we are being rippied off as the car buying public.

Just buy an M400
