I took out a new 2014 S3 at the weekend, it was good fun!

I now want to look at all the options available. Leasing one seems to come out at circa £340 - £380 a month.

So I am also thinking of just taking a loan out and getting a 2010 S3.

I know the 2014 has 300BHP and the 2010 has 276BHP.

The question is, what is the difference?

Is it just better engineering of the new model/engine or is it just a better mapped ECU?

If it's the same engine, then I may just buy the older car and get it remapped to 300BHP

Thanks for your help.

I've not driven a new S3 but I have had a drive in a new A3, it was a fair bit better to drive then the old one. The wife had a 2010 S3, I didn't like driving it at all over any distance, too firm and bloody noisy! I think you'll find the old shape poor in comparison.

But they are quick! I need to have a drive in a new shape one to knock it off the next car list!

The MQB platform is the big difference. I honestly think you'll feel me the 8P car massively different to drive, but not in a good way unfortunately.

Go for the 2010 plate, get dsg too!

Upgrade a few bits and you get 350/360bhp with similar torque figures.. The engines are bullterproof even at this power.

The 8p shape looks better than the newest shape too IMO.

Oh and your not going to take the hit on the depreciation, i sold my old one 8 months later for the same price i paid for it.

The 2014 S3 (8V) is on the lighter MQB platform and is leagues ahead of the older 2010 (8P) cars.

The 2014 S3 is as quick as a 2012 RS3 (8P) so shows you how much the new car has moved on.

The price you quoted will be for a base spec car, add in S-tronic, nice colour, Nav pack and Sports Seats and it will push that figure up quite a bit.

If you're leasing, depreciation is irrelevant. If the new S3 8V is a 10, the old S3 8P is a 6.

I have an S3 (8V) at the moment and have driven the 8P model a few times in the past so speak from experience.

Newer one has the 2.0TSI CJX engine (Audi call it a TFSI rather than TSI) where as the older one has the 2.0TFSI CDL engine

I've had the CDL engine in my 2010 SEAT Leon Cupra R and its good but the CJX in my 2014 SEAT Leon Cupra 280 is better.

Be careful of your prices for leasing the S3 - the best I could just find on a quick search, were all over £400+vat. I think you will be in for a shock if you expect to pay any less than £430...on a basic spec car.

Obviously if you have a great business contract, then that could be the difference.

Had mine since 1st March and I would be being very nit-picky to find a problem with it when it comes to the real world (commuting, odd blast, boot capacity, fuel consumption...). It's NOT a track car - it's a road car that goes very quickly indeed.

And hopefully one that doesn't like to drink oil too much.

Mine wasn't a massive drinker, but it did sink 400ml per 1k miles.
Was bl00dy quick and good fun with Revo and DSG though.

However, mine was a 2011 sportback and did feel somewhat of an old design with its interior, not any better (possibly worse) than the 2003 B6 S4 it replaced in regards to interior fit and finish.

I have the 8p at the moment and will be going for new s3 or possibly the RS3 next year.

Good link - even that is >£450 per month with a £3.3k deposit. If the OP has found a car on lease for the prices he quoted, I'd say get it!! smile
