I am looking into getting a telephoto lens for my EOS 3000. My plan is to save up to get a dSLR in due course and just switch camera bodies.

I am considering this.

What are the pros and cons of getting that as instead of a 500mm mirror lens which is what I had planned on doing before I spotted that?

I know the mirror lens will be significantly smaller and lighter, that doesnt bother me too much; and that this has adjustable aperture and a mirror lens would have a fixed aperture, this also has the 2x teleconverter which I probably wouldnt get otherwise.

If anyone else is interested there are a number on ebay.

TIA

Hi Hugh,
Probably not what you want to hear but I'd put the money into a DSLR and worry about lenses later. If I had to choose a long telephot on a budget I'd have a mirror lens: not so much (cheap) glass to degrade the image.

I have no personal experience of this lens or the company but every gut instinct in my body is screaming out not to touch this behemoth.

I think you'd be better off with a budget 300mm prime or zoom and then use it with a teleconverter.

I could be wrong though, and this could be a veritable bargain. But somehow, I doubt it...

I'm with DeaDLocK.

Surf the web to look at the Canon and Sigma primes (both well respected) and even from the photos, something tells you to avoid this one...

Happy to be proven wrong. If you could try one for free at a retailer, it might be a better bet.

I have to agree. I kept looking at these when I was looking for a loooong lens. All very slick and well presented. Gut feel told me to leave well alone!

If anyone has been tempted I'd love to know your honest opinion. Surely, you only get what you pay for?

I'm with the rest of the guys here, steer well clear.

33ft closest focusing distance

your far better getting the dSLR body now and then latter adding something like a 100-400 L or the sigma equiv. you'll get far more use from these lenses and only have to shell out once for a long lens.
