Skjold-class "Corvettes"

There are two of these in Aberdeen harbour just now (HNoMS Skjold and HNoMS Skudd).



They look fantastic (although grey, not as above).

I was amazed to see they can do 60 knots.

Remove the armament, fit some Rolls Royce instead of the P & W and with a more luxurious interior that would make for a cool Yacht.

I think a 16" shell would quickly turn that into a few sheets of hardboard

I think by the time the US Navy had persuaded the Pentagon to talk Congress into releasing the funds to recommision any of the Iowa class battleships one of these Corvettes at 60kts would be slightly out of range...

Is there a weapons system that can deliver a 16" shell onto a target moving at 60knots? I suspect not (obviously, you could have a "lucky" hit ;-)

LRLAP might do it from a six inch gun, it's only GPS so the target would have to be predictable, but it can do MRSI (Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact) to up the chances.

And Oto Malera have been touting an IR guided version of it's 127mm Vulcano for anti ship (and semi active laser/GPS dual mode 155mm for land use).

We seem to be seeing a move back towards guns - now guidance electronics are tough enough to survive; much cheaper and better able to cope with swarm and saturation attacks.

This doesn't seem a bad overview.

one of the few examples that made it into production.

Designed to lie quietly amongst some small rocky islands or within a fjord, then dash out and launch a bevy of missiles against the enemy at close range, hence the camouflage.
If ever caught in the open sea they would be easy meat for helicopters with ASM, which is why the RN doesn't have any.
