I have beeb looking at a few 993 Targas to replace me 1996 BMW M3. Can anybody tell me if the 993 Targa is based on the coupe bodyshell or the convertible, and indeed if the handling of the Targa is more similar to the coupe / convertible. I've been in a 993 coupe and was massivley impressed, I just fancy a bit of open air motoring, but dont like 'proper' converibles.
Any views/ opinions greatly reveived.

I seem to recall reading that it's based on the convertible bodyshell. For a while I was interested in a 993 targa, but ultimately decided that buying a car with the "compromised" stiffness of the convertible bodyshell with added weight on top for the sake of what is not much more than a big sunroof just wasn't worth it, even though I like the concept and think that it's a great step forward from the previous targas.
In the end I said sod it and bought a 993tt with a sunroof instead - no regrets!

As the owner of a 993 Targa (see profile), I can only tell you that it's my ideal car - a view, incidentally, mooted in a recent Porsche Post (PCGB) editorial. I can't comment on whether or not its heavier roof compromises its trackday performance because I haven't tried it in those conditions, but in real conditions it provides an ideal solution. The top, when open, provides a near cabriolet feel of open-air motoring and, when shut, gives a light and airy feel to the compartment. When it's gloomy outside, you can slide across the inner roof lining and it's then like being in a standard coupe.
When I bought the car, I was told that Porsche had produced it with special lightweight wheels to offset the weight, but I can't confirm the truth of that. I think the wheels are lightweight magnesium alloys, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable could tell you more.
Mine was the only Targa in the 993 Register line-up at the PCGB Brands Hatch meeting in August and I couldn't help noticing that it was the car that attracted most attention from visitors to that line-up!
If you're looking for a trackday car, you'll need better advice, but if you want an all-rounder, the Targa is the one to go for! IMHO, of course!

Yes, 993 Targe is based on cab, was originally hinted at being a bolt-on hardtop in "spy shots", then porsche came out and said it was the new Targa.
IMHO it's a great compromise. Not keen on the wheels but that glass roof looks beautiful. Sure it costs a bit of weight, but ditch the spare tire, compressor, and tools, and you've lost the excess!
