I'm sure there is a simple solution to this but I can't find it.

I am running Word 2003, and currently if I try and make something a bulleted list, it turns the entire document into a bulleted list. This also happens when I make something italic, everything goes italic. It's driving me MAD!!

Thanks in advance.

Word 2003 is the most irritating piece of crap ever. It fits Bliars nannying philosophy perfectly, always meddling where it's not wanted.

MS, off meddling with documents, if I want formatting doing, I'll ask for it. And yes, I know I'm typing a letter!

Use wordpad

Are you modifying a style setting rather than just the text you want to apply the formatting to?

Haha yes it should be renamed Blair 2003!

I'm not modifying a style - simply highlighting the text I want changing and clicking, for example, the "I" (italic) button. It then all changes!

Sorry - I meant "what is actually happening" rather than "what are you trying to do"

i.e. if you now go and inspect the Normal style (after everything's gone italic), does it state that the style includes italic?

Either way, it sounds like a bug.

Yes, when everything's gone italic and I look under "Styles and Formatting", the normal style is now also italic. It's infuriating!!

sounds silly but to get you going for now

could you create a second doc

delete in first doc what you don't want formatted the n change format

copy and paste afterwards from back up document

working around it I know but gets you going

It's an "automatically update" issue in Style
Open a new blank document then go to FORMAT; STYLE and scroll to Normal - remove the tick in the "automatically update" box.

When this is ticked any change you make to Normal text will be applied globally to any text having that Style.

Sorted - I hope!

Praise the heavens - I think you've got it! Thank you!
