Research from the Centre of Policy Studies has shown that Birth rates have fallen most among the skilled working class.

Birth rates for Professionals and Managerials rose by 38.2% between 1970 and 2000

Birth rates for the Skilled working class fell by 43.8% between 1970 & 2000.

and Birth rates for the Partly Skilled and Unskilled fell by a smaller proportion-by 14.5%

The report blames the increased financial pressures on Families on average incomes, who receive little help from Government policies.

To take an example the report claims that a two parent household with one working parent earning £24,000 is (after tax and benefits) only £1 per person better off each week than a single mother with two children living on benefits.

This study is no doubt going to be used as justification that low income families should recieve more benefits.

Alternatively

If you cant afford to feed and cloth yourselves or the children you already have they dont have any more

Interesting that althrough the lower down the Social Class system you go the larger the birth rate.

Mind you the average of death is lower as well of those further down the social ladder.

I'd be interested to see the birth rate in absolute terms rather than % changes (often misleading) - as wealthier people often have fewer children anyway.

Civilisation is a limit on Darwinism, as that would lead to an intolerably inhumane consequence. The problem is when the "cuddly feely" brigade take over HQ, there should be a balance of uncompromising progress and humanity, we are experiencing a bias to the former. So, in essence, it is reverse evolution, which may be realised genetically in time.

Blairs bunch are trying (from their towers of gold) to create a meritocracy through a left wing vision, the sad thing is, they are dealing with too many factors in isolation, and it isn't working.

The trouble is a lack of public school chaps on the job, (not being elitist, but that STYLE of person which is guaranteed by a thorough education), a good education produces a comprehensive mind, which is obviously needed to glue the pieces of the bigger picture together. Everything taught these days is in measured isolation and cross links are not examinable!!! It's a shitty state of affairs, but the idiots are starting to prevail through the ranks. Take teachers for example (most).....

I will save philosophising about the future of B (used to be GB) as it is the object for a post beers rant.

From the information I have seen is unclear whether they mean Birth rates per family or as a whole.

What the foreword to the report did mention is that larger families are more common among Professionals-such as four child families so it is possible they mean on a per family basis.

Most of the News websites that mention this report have not mentioned the birth rates aspect, which is I believe one of the appendices to the main report.

I agree - but its v. hard to actually do "joined up" goverment-.... but as Bliar and cronies are mostly public school / Oxbridge (but socialists)- more of them would hurt not hinder.

They are hypocrites of the highest order - massively wealthy yet have an unbridled passion to saddle the rest of us with the huge cost of implementing their left wing social-engineered "vision" of the future where ££££ BILLIONS is burnt for no benefit to GB.

(btw - I've nothing against public/Oxbridge types as I am one - I'm just not a champagne socialist).

Act 1

Scene 1 The delivery room of a maternity ward in an NHS hospital circa 1977.

Midwife " Come on Mrs Smith. Baby's little head's nearly out now . Just one more push should do it. So take a deep breath ....................and push."

Mrs Smith " Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggghhhhhh!!

Midwife "That's it, well done!"

Midwife (picking up baby) "Doctor, Come and stitch Mrs Smith's kipper, while I wash the snot off this"

The sound of a quick slap is heard

Baby Smith " Nnngh, Aargh, Nnrraaghh, Ngggh" (etc)

Scene 2

The Marernity waiting room, where a number of expectant fathers are anxiously pacing the room and smoking heavily.

Enter stage left the Midwife

Midwife " Mr Smith"

Mr Smith "Well Nurse what is it?"

Midwife "Well Mr Smith you're very lucky. I'm pleased to inform you that you've got a lovely little electrician."

Mr Smith "Fantastic"

Midwife " That's right, most people these days end up with a manager or professional and that can be a terrible drain on family resources. Why only yesterday Mrs Jones had twins and they were both accountants. This morning Mr Jackson had to be admitted to coronary care when he found out he'd fathered an independant financial advisor."

Mr Smith and another man are now creeping towards the door.

Midwife " Mr Smith, where are you going, don't you want to spend some quality time with your wife and electrician"

Mr Smith " No that doesn't start to happen until the arrival of 'new man' in the mid-80's. I'm off down the pub with me old mate Sid James here, for a gander at Barbara Windsor's charlies"

Sid James "Phnarr, Phnarrr, (trademark earthy cackle etc)"

The End

Can you tell I'm Bored

A few years ago I would have argued that there arent really any social classes any more....

However, I am completely wrong. I recently met two families who are sooooo middle class that its painful. Well, actually they sooo want to be middle class.....

So, I can well believe the figures and I can well believe what it means. However, it would be interesting to find out *WHY* people have fewer / more children depending on your social class..... now that would make interesting reading.

Ok, perhaps they were the dross which happened to get through the filter. If they had the knowledge (comprehensive) and could actually use it (intelligence) there would not be this problem. This bunch have clearly failed to get beyond the book stage of politics.
