Dirt in fuel filter

How often do people clean out their fuel filters. Mine are picking up a lot of dirt from somewhere which eventually seems to be restricting flow.
The 100micron filter seems to have a fair bit of grit in it. Car now done about 3,500 miles but was cleaned out less than 1,000 miles ago. The 10micron fllter (paper element) was also replaced at that point though no real signs of dirt on it (though could be hard to tell).
On new cars could there be an amount of "build dirt" that needs to flush through?
