X-Wing and Tie-Fighter
Discussion
Just a heads up, these two classics are now on Steam and can be bought with their two siblings X-Wing Versus Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance £20. It also includes the addons for X-Wing and Tie Fighter.
Tie Fighter must remain one of the best made games ever. Can't wait till the D/L finishes.

Cool, I tried to install my old copy of X-Wing Alliance a while ago but it proved utterly incompatible with a modern OS. Someone must have done some work on these to get them on Steam.
I do wonder what a 15-year old game will look like though on modern hardware...pretty crude I'd imagine. Great game though, back in the day.

If you want to install mods for X-wing Alliance and still have the original disks available you can build a new cd image for X-wing Alliance using the msi installers here at http://www.markusegger.at/software/games/ and this should get the game installed at least and it will run. There are also installers for the older games (though not DOS / floppy disk versions) if you want to try and get them to run with the original CDs before buying off Steam.
For X-wing Alliance go to the X-wing Alliance Upgrade site and in the editing forum look at the top set of pinned topics for how to patch the executable and get it to run on modern machines also at higher resolutions. On the site as well there are craft packs which also automatically modify the executables in addition to upgrading most of the models and graphics in the game. These only work on original retail or Good Old Gaming.com versions though as the guy who made the craft packs has already said Steam versions aren't going to be done. You'll need to install first from the new disk images created by the Markus Egger installers to use the mods.
