Retrospective 10% Wear and Tear allowance
Discussion
Not sure if this is the best place to post this however:
I have a furnished rental flat, have done since late 2013.
I haven't so far claimed the 10% wear and tear allowance for furnishings but will start this year.
Question is, can I retrospectively claim this for the tax year 2013 / 2014?
I suspect not but every little helps!
Cheers

Yes you can.
It seems you may have submitted an incorrect Self Assessment tax return for tax year 2013/14 by not claiming the Wear and Tear Allowance you were entitled to. So - you can submit a "repaired" return for 2013/14. In fact, you can submit repaired returns for 2011/12 and 2012/13 if appropriate as well.
There are a few important points you need to be aware of regarding any claims for "10% Wear and Tear".
"Wear and Tear" is a substitute for claiming the ACTUAL cost of renewals of furniture and fittings. If you made claims for the actual replacement of beds, chairs, sofas, cabinets etc etc, you CANNOT claim the 10% Wear and Tear as well.
Also, the Wear and Tear amount is calculated on the 10% value of Gross Rents LESS Council Tax/Rates/Water Charges paid by the landlord.
Finally, the claim for the actual amount spent on furniture renewals and replacements is now abolished and the ONLY way to get relief for such items is to make sure you do make the 10% Wear and Tear allowance claim.
