I've just joined the McLaren life forum and have already received an email from someone asking me what discount I got on the 540.

I never even thought about this when placing the order because it's a brand new car that will be built to spec, it's at least a year away and my order will only become fixed when I spec the car.

However, it has made me think. I know there was discounting going on with 12Cs as they over supplied the market iirc, but have they now got their supply correct with the 650S (and hopefully therefore with the Sports Series) so that residuals are more protected?

Having never purchased at this level, I have no idea what to expect.

Don't worry, I can't see any discount being available at all. When you consider the much cheaper starting price and the interest in the 540/570, why would they?

Perhaps if you're a P1 owner or a serial McLaren collector you may have a deal based on your relationship but not the transaction.

The 12C was a completely different situation a lifetime ago, so to speak.

Thanks Bredvan - that was my thinking but the Q I received threw me a little.

Supply and Demand

McLaren have been fairly aggressive with their pricing strategy on 540/570S against its sports car competitors and its a new product with high interest/demand so they are not going to offer discounts to early cars for sure.

Early MP4 12C suffered from bad press which had a major impact sales, resulting in over supply and discounting and subsequently effecting residuals. After the initial hit 12C values have stabilised and remained strong if you bought used.
650S is totally different having had rave reviews and is in short supply and they have now found a level circa £200k where they sell very quickly for this type and value of car ( this level of early new car depreciation is no different to a 458 or Huracan, in fact probably better due to availability )

Big IF demand doesn't meet expectations and they have over produced the 540/570S, later stock cars may attract a discount particularly at the back end of the year 2016 but even so these cars are going to be worth over £100k all day long so buy it, drive it and don't worry about it. You will have a cracking car for the money

I doubt Ferrari will be discounting the 488

Apparently quite a few sold prior to you purchasing Gary so based on their present saleability I would have thought none yo very little discount. As everyone is saying just look forward to picking it up and enjoying it. Don't think you'll have a problem with that!

There are certainly a lot of orders in, if that's what you mean.

I'd prefer no discounts and good residuals to be honest but, at the end of the day, it's a car to be enjoyed and that's what I'm intending on doing regardless biggrin

One thing I will not forget is how fortunate I am to be in a position to own such a car.

Indeed. Just returned from a country road blat with the roof down and the exhaust howling, it would have taken surgery to remove the smile from my face. You do have to pinch yourself at times.

You're going to love it!
