S-Type Tyres

I found out today that S-Types are meant to have special "Jaguarised" Pirelli tyres fitted to them. My car has them on the front but not at the back.

Does anyone know the difference between the standard P6000 and the P6000J? A guy at the tyre centre (who balanced my wheels today to cure a vibration) said they look identical, but of course cost more!

Just wondering if it's something like a different sidewall construction...... and then if it's and issue to not have them fitted at the back!

I'm sure Jaguar would tell me it's potentially lethal to not have they're tyres on the car and that I'm risking life and limb ;-)

There's a formulation code on the sidewall unique to the Jag spec tyres. As a general rule a tyre formulated to suit a certain manufacturer will have it's plies laid at an angle that suits the sensitivity / steering feel combination, plus sidewall stiffness to suit the ride requirement.

I think only the tyre Engineer at Jaguar and his Pirelli counterpart would know what the tyre formulation actually is, everybody else would give you a load of waffle.

If you buy the Jag tyres it will ride and steer like the original. If you fit normal aftermarket tyres from the same manufacturer you may experience a slight loss of sharpness in steering but typically with less sensitivity to imbalance, or have super sharp steering and a need to balance the tyres regularly.

Buying Pirellis will always be better than some brand you've never heard of, the alternative is to use tyres that Jaguar signed off, which are listed in the owner's manual.
