"THE DVLA have issued important new advice to all motorists intending to hire cars in future.
From June 8, the paper counterpart of UK photocard driving licences will be abolished.
The paper counterpart has always contained details of any driving convictions or penalty points, but from June onwards, this information will have to be obtained online before you try to hire a car.
The DVLA has produced this video to help drivers ensure they are prepared for the changes: "
Video is on the url .
Looks like the quote will be "Another fine mess you've got us in Dave " ( After all he's the leader of the Gov't in office at tghe time the decision was taken to get rid of the paper bit. )

I still don't understand why the photocard licence was not designed to include a chip which holds details of any endorsements - or allows access to them online (kinda like chip and pin).
Seems like a missed opportunity.
Because then every single car hire desk/police station/DVLA offices etc etc would need to be equipped with specialised readers! Would cost millions developing such a system and I'm sure you don't want to pay for it? Seems like a missed opportunity.
Apparently you'll also need to know your National Insurance Number to log in to see your info online, not so easy if you're abroad and don't carry it with you.
Why does it need any type of code? Why not be able to log in with a password like every other site?
If you plan to hire a car for say the second week of a holiday, you'll have to find an internet source to get a valid code.

How do people not know their NI number off by heart? It's easy to remember.
You haven't had a stroke have you!I can remember my driving license number off by heart for some reason - but struggle with PINs and passwords.
Visa Verify is my worst nightmare, as they ask for 2nd 4th and 6th numbers - I can't even recall the number when under pressure (question) let alone which number is in which space - yet if I just decide to write it down without being asked, it will usually come to me!
I notice the National Insurance number is being asked for more and more - the recent online registration to vote scheme requires it too!
DVLA have so far not informed me that I need a photocard - I only have a paper license. When is that due to change?

Is this really such a drama to you? I mean it's not as if a trespassing cat is involved!

The scope would be quite limited, other than hire companies and the police, who else is going to be checking licenses regularly enough to justify buying the equipment, and even for them, how many license do you think they checks a day? and how much time would it really save them when they can still look it up manually with the number. Seems like a missed opportunity.
Just look up the amount of outrage caused by councils putting a simple identity chip on their wheelie bins, you can x that by a thosand for the outrage putting chips in driving licences would cause.

The DVLA could easily put chips in new licenses (tachograph cards have chips, so could just move all licenses over to that production plant)Just look up the amount of outrage caused by councils putting a simple identity chip on their wheelie bins, you can x that by a thosand for the outrage putting chips in driving licences would cause.

Final date for abolition of paper only UK licences (mandated by the EU Third Directive) is 19th January 2033.http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-13-10_en...
The Secretary of State already has the necessary power under existing UK legislation but what date the government of the day will choose to implement it is anyone's guess. I suspect they will leave it as long as possible to allow for natural wastage to keep the number to be dealt with to the minimum. Knowing the DVLA though I'm sure they will manage to
it up. If and when the day comes check your entitlements very carefully!BertBert said:
Print it off before renting a car or going abroad to rent a car?
Info says that hire firm will need you to supply the code, but code only valid for 7 days. So if you plan to hire a week into your holiday, it'll be no good to get the code or print anything off before you go.HantsRat said:
