I was listening to one of my old CD’s in the car today, an album by Delamitri. There’s a track called “Nothing Ever Happens”, which has the line:

"And computer terminals report the gains, on the values of copper and tin, while American businessmen snap up Van Gogh’s, for the price of a hospital wing".

I thought the lyrics of this song were pretty intelligently written and, indeed, thought provoking. I was wondering, anyone know of any other songs that have made an impact of “thoughtful contemplation”?

Lindisfarne Lady Elenor did make me think what the hell it means But I never got anywhere
LADY ELEANOR

Bashee playing magician sitting lotus on the floor
Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw
Had my share of nightmares, didn't think there could be much more
then in walked Rodrick Usher with the Lady Eleanor

She tied my eyes with ribbon of a silken ghostly thread
I gazed with trouble vision on an old four poster bed
Where Eleanor had risen to kiss the neck below my head
and bid me come along with her to the land of the dancing dead

But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
All right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right where I am

She gazed with loving beauty like a mother to a son
like living, dying, seeing, being all rolled into one
Then all at once I heard some music playing in my bones
the same old song I'd heard for years, reminding me of home

But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
All right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right where I am

Then creeping on towards me, licking lips with tongues of fire
a host of golden demons screaming lust and base desire
and when it seemed for certain that the screams could get no higher
I heard a voice above the rest screaming 'You're liar'

But it's all right, Lady Eleanor
All right, Lady Eleanor
I'm all right here in your arms

Jeff Buckley, "Lover, You Should've Come Over"

Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up with water
And maybe Im too young to keep good love from going wrong
But tonight youre on my mind so you never know

When Im broken down and hungry for your love with no way to feed it
Where are you tonight, child you know how much I need it
Too young to hold on and too old to just break free and run

Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage hes done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one

So Ill wait for you... and Ill burn
Will I ever see your sweet return
Oh will I ever learn

Oh lover, you shouldve come over
cause its not too late

Lonely is the room, the bed is made, the open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him
My body turns and yearns for a sleep that will never come

Its never over, my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
Its never over, all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her
Its never over, all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
Its never over, shes the tear that hangs inside my soul forever

Well maybe Im just too young
To keep good love from going wrong

Oh... lover, you shouldve come over
cause its not too late

Well I feel too young to hold on
And Im much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind to see the damage Ive done
Sweet lover, you shouldve come over
Oh, love well Im waiting for you

Lover, you shouldve come over
cause its not too late

Strange how so many of us accept and enjoy poetic material in song lyric form, but won't buy a book of poetry.

I guess it's more accessible.... Also men are fantastically bad at admitting they are interested in such things, being sensitive is seen to be a weakness, perhaps?

We seem to be far and few.

Of course, that achingly beautiful song went on to be murdered by Jamie Cullum which sadly is probably how many people will hear it today.

You met his mum? Wow. Really, wow.

Grace is my favourite album of all time. No contest.

Much to my kids' embarrassment, I do buy the odd poetry book. To make matters worse, I actually have a go at writing poetry on occasion. Boy do I get stick for that!

Joe Cocker - The Simple Things

"...we're always wanting more than what we have,
And what I've learned is all I really need are

The simple things, that come without a price
The simple things, like happiness, joy and love in my life
I've seen it all from so many sides and I hope you would agree
The best things in life are the simple things

Hey everybody don't get me wrong
You got to understand ambition and knowledge
Are the seeds of every woman and man
It's good to work..work hard and prosper
As long as you take time to find...the simple things "

Gets me thinking about my priorities sometimes.

I enjoy a bit of Blake and recently bought Orphic Songs by Dino Campana and a collection on Sylvia Plaths work (also The Bell Jar which is her autobiography of sorts and is makes excellent reading). Tend to only buy from recommendations which don't come often....

Just a misunderstanding LA. It's actually:

"I will lame Edown".

Edown is the name of a Welsh truck driver who drove his 10 tonne lorry over a 5 tonne bridge. He was crippled by the accident.

You may not recall the moment that you asked me
But your invitation was clear
You'll pretend you've never met me
But it's far to late
Now I'm here

Cause I'm the one who knows what scares you
I'm the one who loves you best
I'm the thirteenth at the table
I'm the uninvited guest

I'm the banquo at your banquet
I'm the cuckoo in your nest
I'm your fifteen stone first-footer
I'm the uninvited guest

I was there when you said insincere I love you's
To a woman that wasn't your wife
And I fronted you the money
That you ran away and blew
On the biggest regret of your live

Cause I'm the one who knows what scares you
I'm the who loves you best
I'm the thirteenth at the table
I'm the uninvited guest
I'm the banquo at your banquet
I'm the cuckoo in your nest
I'm your new year's resolution
I'm the uninvited guest

I'm the face you hoped you'd never see
But always knew you would
I'm the one thing you knew you shouldn't do
But did because you could

I'm the evil in your bloodstream
I'm the rash upon your skin
And you made a big mistake alright
The day you let me in

And you can fly to the other side of the world
You know you'll only find
I've reserved the seat behind you
We can talk about old times

Cause I'm the one who knows what scares you
I'm the who loves you best
I'm the thirteenth at the table
I'm the uninvited guest
I'm the banquo at your banquet
I'm the cuckoo in your nest
I'm your fifteen stone first-footer
I'm the uninvited guest
I'm you new year's resolution
I'm the uninvited guest

Yes, lots. I have pretty much all the commercially available albums and trawlled the net for bootleg and live stuff that you can't buy.

One of my favourite recordings is a truly haunting version of Billie Holiday's Strange Fruit that he sung live on some american radio show.

Listening to this in the car this week

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun,
but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought,
or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
When I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the fields
The tolling of an iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

I have to disagree, I think it is about the dominant sense in the individual. Auditory people learn best by hearing the material. Visual people need to see the material to learn most effectively. Kinesthetic people are absorby things by doing. Most individuals use a combination of all three modes, but will have a dominant mode,

For me, I can be completely an utterly moved by the lyrics of a song, whereas some of the people closest to me will miss the words and simply hear a pleasant tune.

BTW, that Del Amitri song takes me back to a really sad and lonely part of my life, funny how music can recapture a moment.

Edit, Wine does not help my spelling.

I've always been a floyd fan, who have some great lyrics, and also keen on tangerine dream (Not huge on the lyrics) but quite like this whcih I have just played again after a while.

"You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do."

Pulp Common people.

THE MEDIA SELLS IT AND YOU LIVE THE ROLE
MENTAL WOUNDS NOT HEALING
DRIVING ME INSANE
