Asking to the ones in the know (well, the police really):
I've purchased a car, it is a Lotus registered car. Lotus has been fuffing around for a few months, so as i didn;t have the car, I did not really look for the V5 on my name. A SORN request was sent our together with the old V5, as I knew collection was not close. Last week i had the car collected, insured and MOTd. All good. Tried to tax the car, no luck. Ring DVLA on monday, my V5 was under "investigation" as there was an export mark on it (i.e. lotus sent out the export bit). They asked me to send a letter confirming i purchased the car in the Uk, and was not exported/imported. i did. Chased every day, they left messages in the system. The lady following the investigation has apparently not been in all week. Fair enough. Problem is: the car is now on the road, mot'd, insured but no road tax. I WANT to pay, but I'm not allowed to. What happens if i get stopped? Can I pre empty it by calling the police? They should be able to get a confirmation from DVLA. Can anyone help, please?

Can Andy graham the Lotus archivist throw any light on it for you?

I'd suggest you don't break the law by driving it untaxed I don't think you'd get any exemption.

Yes the rather unfair issue is that it isn't taxed and so if you put it on the road, you may get done. As the fine can be quite hefty that could be a problem.

Don't park it on the road until it is taxed. Simple as.

Well, easier said than done, in the garage i have 2 projects, correctly sorned, and in the drive the track car. It's not that I'm trying not to pay. I do want to. the matter on lotus side is clear, there was a bit of a c**k up, a department decided it was to be exported, another one sold it. Fairly straight forward to have the v5, just a letter from me. Issue is, the lady who doing the investigation has not been in all week. I'm going to contact the police, I've done anything in my power to obey the law, and there is no requirement for me to check with dval if a car is marked as exported, i believe.

Oh well, called a less than helpful officer who didn't want to listen to me, said i'm outlaw and hung up on me when i was trying to explain the reason why i am but i shouldn't.

Am i wrong to say:
- there is no obligation, upon car purchase, to check anything other than chassis number, and details of previous keeper.
- Ensure there is mot
- ensure there insurance
- go to the post office and pay tax

I've done it all, the DVLA has put a block and I'm in the wrong. Feckers.

So much for trying to stick to the law. DVLA is useless (shocker!) and police borderline rude (which in fairness i wasn't expecting). I'll ask asylum for the car to a neighbor.
