Try living in Reading - we have a large population of them anyway, then once a year we have the Reading Festival too when they all descend on the place

IMHO I have known different kinds of goths, the real ones who started it just liked to wear elizabethan/victorian clothes and study poetry, Got together with a couple of other subcultures and chatted. Then the sheeple started following them around and making it massive. Unfortunatly when thigns like this happen you start to gather psychos like this. Most of the goths I knew tried to distance themselves from satanic nutters because it made them look bad.

As for Manson, he just plays a little rock and roll. I'm not keen on the music or the style but the person strikes me as someone who would give an very interesting after dinner speech.

- there are two kinds of 'Goth' music too - the sort with lyrics like Classical Gothic poetry and really quite relaxing, enticingly dark-sounding melodies from the likes of The Mission, Sisters Of Mercy and Fields Of The Nephilim (ie the kind I like), and then you get the thrashing, screaming, masochism-inducing wailing.

Point is, I'm sick of music being blamed for things like this - it's the nutter who goes off the rails who kills, not what's in his walkman. It's been done to death - back in the '50s they were blaming Elvis for a rise in underage sex and teddy boys slashing cinema seats, then it was Punk 'causing' violence in the '70s, Metal making people commit suicide in the '80s (remember Rob Halford's (Judas Priest) trial, which he won by saying you can make yourself think that lyrics say anything when you're in the wrong state of mind, and 'who plays their records backwards anyway?'), then they were blaming Oasis for turning people into thugs, Eminem for making everyone homophobic, Gangsta Rappers for making everyone want to, err, become a gangster (and the ludicrous claims about how music 'creates' a culture of anti-academia among Black boys - what bull ), and now we're laying into poor old Marilyn Manson again.

Ever seen him interviewed on telly? He's a very intelligent man with a lot of sensible things to say.

Blaming music for things like this is the oldest, poorest excuse in the book - the guy was just unstable. He could have been driven to kill by listening to Dolly Parton and watching repeats of The Good Life.

Well they have already layed into computer games this last year and needed to go for another easy target. The only way a computer game can drive someone to kill is purely by exposure to idiot counterstrike players.

What is it with goths? Mainly what's with them is that they just want to be left alone. And if you had people say some of the things on this thread about you just because of what you wear, so would you. It's strange, I would have thought people on here would have had a lot more time for goths, since they are the antithesis of the chav.

As you may have guessed by now many of my friends are goths, and a lot of them are the most intellectual, well-read people I know. They also look out for each other in a way that many on this forum would moan that we don't any more.

Goths don't do anyone any harm - nutters do. Just because that nutter is wearing black, it's no reason to have a go at a section of British society that conducts itself a damn sight better than many do.

I pretty much consider myself a borderline 'proper' goth without the clothes/makeup/piercings/jewellry, and most people in the rock community are pretty similar. We're intelligent and we look out for each other, rather than the chavs who don't think too much about their music and use everything as an excuse to hate and fight.

Yup. Agree there. Of all my friends, the ones that truely care for eachother are the rockers. They're the friendliest and often the must fun just to down a few pints with. None of this piss-taking for the sake of it, just generally great people.

i consider myself a goth i just don't wear the makeup and piercings and it just seems that all goths get blamed for a stupid thing one person does, that is like saying all black people are facist dictators because of idi amin it just seems ludicrous

I think blaming the music is totally unjust, I am a complete fan of the early gothic movement, my favourite band of all time is Bauhaus, I like the depth, the presence and emotion associated with this style.

I think this case, sad as it is and I feel for friends and family involved would possibly dare I say it, have happened anyway, if it wasn't this influence it would have been something else, whatever the boy related to.

If you are a sadistic psycho it's in your blood.

Music doesn't instruct a strong mind.
