hi,
Need some advice about how to tell the difference between a standard c2 993 front caliper and front turbo 993 calipers(big reds)other than the colour.I know the discs and pads are slightly different but the turbo disc and pad could be fitted to a standard 993 caliper?Anyway here is a link to the picture of the unknown calipers which i've been told are "big reds" but are black. Can anyone tell?

If it's black then it's not "BIg Red" which is, well, red. I haven't heard anybody painting the red ones black, plenty doing it the other way round though. The one in the picture looks just like the one on my car, ie not Big Red.

I think the later 928 models were fitted with 993 Turbo front brakes, painted black by the factory

The standard 993 calipers are smaller than the big reds,,,I think you were asking if the turbo pads will fit standard calipers...if so,,they will not...turbo discs are larger which is why the Turbo caliper is also larger.

There are loads of diferent Porsche calipers types & big red is used for a load of diferent derivations.

Ref black Calipers 946RS calipers are 'I think' 965 3.6T big reds painted black by Porsche & 993T (same as 993RS?) calipers are black when fitted to a 928- think its S4/GT or maybe its GTS.

D'oh!

The 964RS and 965 3.3T caliper are not black Big Reds, they are effectlively a 928S4/993 caliper that has spacers lugs cast onto the mounting face to enable them to run on a 322mm disc. These calipers are the only ones out of the S4/BR range that will not sit flat on their face when placed on a flat surface.

The photo link below seems to show a 928GTS caliper which I think was available as a "Big Red painted black", but the only way to really tell is to measure the pad width, because the BR pad is around 7mm wider than the S4/993 pad.
