Help! boot problem

frosty morning today, unlocked boot and boot opened with constant clicking heard from the release mechanism ..assumed the microswitch had stuck 'on' with the frost. got some hot water to pour on it, but by the i came back the clicking had stopped. shut the boot and half an hour later tried to open... no! not working at all now! ....then the realisation that the car is low on fuel. understand there is a method from previous postings, am quite happy for anyone to check me out!

Sounds like you need a new boot/actuator!
(without making too much of a noise) i was referring to the method of getting into the boot when the actuator is'nt working. i don't know of any emergency pull handles in the car interior that will open the boot. sure the owners manual just says, "push the cerbie badge" to gain access. my question is of a more technical nature ....i can hear the faint click of a relay somewhere around the fusebox area of the boot, think i do need a new 'actuator' ...but where is it, (and is it in the RS catalogue?)
The boot solenoid (motor actaully) is behind the badge. Once the boot is open you can gain access by pulling back the boot carpet from the LH lamp cluster. The rear panel is actually double skinned and there is an opening in the inner skin around the badge area that will allow access to the motor, held by two screws above the opening.
The motor has a really crap piece of wire that goes to the boot latch. You can see the workings of the latch by pulling out the interior light. When you press the badge, the motor pulls the wire and releases the boot. When you close the boot, the lock mechanism pulls the motor back into position.
If the motor is running you will hear it so from what you say I don't think its busted. Far more likely to be the wire. The motor looks like the Maplin part (YD79L) that costs less than a tenner.

cheers mike, thats just what i was after :-) ....will rip the carpet off again at the weekend, had it off recently looking for the 'banging' noise in the boot, that turned out to be the anti-roll bar, with a missing clamp. joy! ..so just need to fix the boot, power steering and starter motor and stop the engine catching fire
