Hi all, I'm looking at a 2007 Porsche Cayman 2.7 with about 60,000 on the clock. It's been serviced 3 times - 2009, 2011, 2014 - and looks pretty tidy for around £17k. However, I'd always thought that a Porsche should be serviced every 2 years? So, should I be worried about the 3 year gap? Also, what should I expect to have been done in that time? Any major elements that should've been replaced or renewed in the first 60,000 miles that I should be aware of?

Also, I'm not sure whether to consider solely trade cars or to also open the door to private sales. You see, I understand that you get an element of peace of mind with a trade purchased car, but if I bought privately and covered myself with a third-party warranty, am I not getting almost as good a deal? The car is cheaper when purchased privately and so the savings could cover the warranty and what not.

Furthermore, there's apparently only one key? Should that put me off?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Yeah, I agree with all your points. *Sigh* Perhaps I'm just destined never to find a Cayman. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, but my budget is small (circa £18,000) and I'm very fussy. I want a properly cherished Cayman ideally in black with less than 60k on the clock. I also want it to come with a 2 year warranty, sat nav, stylish alloys (I'm not a fan of the standard Cayman alloys), full leather interior, blah, blah blah.

I had been considering only 3.4 Cayman's, but I've since been scared off those by the fact that they seem to suffer from extensive engine reliability issues such as bore scoring. I simply can't afford to fork out £5-7k for an engine rebuild as I'm sure is the case for most!

I know that I want a Cayman. There's nothing else out there that I think comes close for the money. It's just a case of finding one!

Seems a little overpriced to me,please get it properly inspected before you buy,any good specialist will charge you about 100 quid to get it up on a ramp and give it a good look over and report, could well be the best 100 quid you ever spent!!

You seem in the same boat as me , eternally searching !!

And there aren't thousands of them for sale , well not on any websites I've found

A daily search on autotrader continually brings up the same cars

I want a cayman with <60K ,

Essentials for me are

rear parking sensors (for the wife ! ) lets face it she'll drive it at some point !
cruise control
leather seats
upgraded alloys , multi spoke ones don't know the name
silver or grey

budget 17k

So, what would be a good trade price for a 1st Generation Porsche Cayman 2.7 with less than 60,000 on the clock?

I have to say, I've been looking for a long time now and I've definitely not seen any Cayman's from traders at those prices. Certainly not from decent traders. They do seem to reside around the £17-19k mark which I feel is rather expensive. I'd happily pay £15-16k for one of these beauties (2.7) with between 40,000 to 60,000 on the clock.

It does seem to me that you can get a 3.4 S for about the same as a bog-standard 2.7, which is odd. Perhaps this is due to the issues that blight the larger engine?

This is very true. Personally, I don't see why I'd want to shift it for a minimum of 3 years. More likely 4 or 5.

Yup! And that car you found is sold! I'm just going to have to bide my time and hope I can find something decent within my budget. It's a waiting game. I'll be looking every day!

Cheap money from just about everywhere- you can get an interest free credit card or two and buy a £20k motor at the moment..

have you seen the price of those multi spoke alloys !! nearly 2k !

And you have to admit they look much better !

I also agree on prices , a cayman is my dream car been looking at prices over the last year or so whilst saving my money up and i reckon they have gone up by 1k 1.25k for the same cars

I'd put service history and condition ahead of just about everything else. Personally, a three-year gap in the service history would have me running away. Oil deteriorates over time, you can't avoid this fact. Three year old oil really isn't doing much good for the engine. Looked at a 996 last weekend, advertised as 'full history' - but with two three year gaps in the service book and no receipts. I walked away there and then.

Take your time, and find a good car with perfect history. Wheels / tyres can be changed. Damage done by poor servicing costs a lot more to fix.
