Been away for few weeks so I parked the car hard up against the wall to give the next car space a bit more room. I normally park the other way around, but for some reason parked in this way this time!

After a week or so the car shuts down some electrics to save the battery - which meets the remote key fob now doesn't work. Perfectly normal and usually you can just open the drivers door with the key, start the car and everything is back to normal.

Except now I can't open the drivers door more than about 3 inches, so no way I can get inside the car. I can just about squeeze in beside the door, so could maybe get my arm in the top of the window. To give an idea of how close it is, my legs don't fit between the rear arch and the wall, but I can sort of hop over in to the space beside the door.

So here's the challenge:

There is no keyhole on the passenger door.
The key-fob doesn't work at all - I can't open the doors or boots.
From memory, you've got about 10 seconds between unlocking the door and starting the car, or the alarm goes off.
It's in 1st gear (manual), so leaning through the window and starting it is not an option.
The battery seems ok - I did unlock the door and the interior light came on, but I locked it again quickly when I realised what a mess I was in!

Any ideas?

How did you get out?

Also, lie on roof open door, keys in ignition, wind down passenger window.

Jack up back end, rotate away from wall. Use key.

(and if that doesn't work - jack up front end too and move it as well).

Smash passenger window? I'll bet no one pays it any attention if you do!

Can't you access the hatch ? Or failing that, could buy/hire some garage mobility devices (dollies) to pull the car over a bit ?

I climbed out the passenger side when I parked it. (long story short, there is normally a car parked 'behind' where it is now, and given the wall and pillar it's hard to nose in the other way and get it close).

Lying on the roof might work to reach the ignition, not a bad idea. Maybe just turning the ignition on might be enough to bring the electrics back to life (without actually starting it).

Open door, lower drivers window and slide into the car from the roof. Probably best not to do it in jeans with metal studs.

Great idea, cheers. Think I'm off to ebay then!

Can you not just lift it from the front end and swivel it? Looks like there's enough room between rear wheel arch and wall not to damage? I'm guessing you need a mate to help

Honestly don't think I'd fit even doing that. It's really close. Could probably get my arm in to open the window - might try that if the electrics work.

My worry is that unlocking the door and stuffing about for more than 10 seconds will set the alarm off - and I'm not sure that locking the door at the point will stop the alarm.

I think your going to have to put up with an alarm at some point. Can you jack these from the middle, diff? If so, wheel dollys under each wheel, pull it out.

Get your ear muffs out!

So you can get the key in the door ?

I believe if you unlock the door but leave the key in it and press the unlock on the remote, it should leave the power saving standby mode.

Aren't these things supposed to have a pretty even weight balance? Even assuming you're lifting less than half the weight, it's still got to be 500kgs at least! Nice idea though - might work in a 911 wink

Can you borrow a small child?

On my Cayman, opening the door with the key makes the whole car "wake up". Are you sure you can't open the driver's door with the key, then use the fob to open the rest of the car?

Ah, that's the sort of idea I was hoping for. I'll go and try it.
