I have received a couple of responses to my recent classified advert with the message "Is this your car? I am very interested in purchasing but first i want to make sure if this is your car.
Regards".

I can only assume since I have received the same email from two different email addresses that it must be a phishing scam.

Anyway, just thought I'd put it out there FYI.

For these it is worth googling the email address they are being sent from - that way can tell you pretty quickly if these are scam enquirers.

Unfortunately by being number 2 to Autotrader now we have greater visibility in the scam world, and this is a nature of that. We are working on ways to try and reduce the number of contacts from non-genuine buyers but it a constant game.

If they are scammers then pass on their email addresses on here or to me on a PM and we can at least block them from our systems to stop them emailing others.

I've had 2 of these now. I replied to them before I twigged it might be a scam. Given the fact that I am a complete dinosaur when it comes to technology, should I have done this? Is my e-mail account at risk now?

Hi, I've just received the same message from smithaidan84+eisenberg@gmail.com

>>>>>>>
Hello,
Is this your car?
Link: peston-heads-com.7pz.me/clasifieds-used-cars-autos----2854768/39
(if the link does not work copy and paste it into a new tab window)

Can you please let me know what is the real price for it? I saw your add on Piston-heads but another seller has the same car up for sale at half your asking price.
Regards
<<<<<<

Luckily I spotted the "pEston-heads" link and was suspicious, so hopefully no harm done.
I'm disappointed with PistonHeads though. This is the 2nd scam for this advert and I haven't had any genuine interest as yet. It makes me think that I won't use PistonHeads in future, unless they can eliminate these scams.

Today I also got such, also one in the past, but I found it so strange that they ask to copy paste their line in the browser to see if its my car (when they reacted on the original PH link and the link to my ad was also in that mail original, so strange)

so...I will not react back and of course not try their link out (I'm to scarred for such) then I rather not sell biggrin

but then I came across this thread and see the same sort of asking etc...so I guess this one could be scam too?
if not, I'm sorry I posted this, but here we go what came in today and 'smells' fishy? >>

Just for information of PH - Perhaps daftly I did reply to the first without any response, I received the second one today that read similar again from a caramail etc and as a result of a search on PH forum on the topic I'm ignoring it.

Thanks all

Kelly.lim@caramail.com

JacobFrancis133@caramail.fr

Both sent me mails...

I didn't click on the links...do they think I was born yesterday?

I did however furnish them with my bank details and online password. After all, they offered me a 50% share of US$20m that their mothers hid from the evil oppressors. Seems legit.

It's a phishing scam - they aren't interested in the car at all. They've created a copy of the PH classifieds interface, and they are trying to get you to login to your account to get your username / email / password. This is why it's important to use a unique password for everything.

Convenient of PH to recently merge forum and classifieds usernames etc. Makes it easier for the scammers to compromise everything at once!
