Our 2007 Focus 1.6 diesel had an "Engine Systems Fault" pop up on the tripcounter screen. I had it diagnosed as a speed sensor fault, this hasn't been investigated any further. Moving on to last week, the engine management light came on, I had it checked with my local mechanic and he has said that the eolys fluid is low/empty and needs topping up. He also said that both EML warnings are linked and that no speed sensor fault is showing now!

As his equipment wont reset the EML he has recommended someone to me and it's booked for Monday. Question is, are we going to do any permanent damage if we continue using the car or have we already caused damage if the original fault was an issue with the eolys fluid.

I've had both of these on my 1.6D Focus (not at the same time though). The 'Engine Systems Fault' message came up last October and the car went into limp mode. Had it diagnosed at a local indy as failed glow plugs. These were replaced and it's been fine since.

In January the EML came on and I read the code with my bluetooth OBD dongle, which was 'Diesel Particulate Filter efficiency below threshold', so I thought it might have been low Eolys fluid. After clearing the fault, it reappeared after about 100 miles, so had it investigated at the same time as the service which I had already booked. I kept driving it for another 400 miles or so (no problems) and the EML came back on, went off and back on again. Turned out it wasn't the Eolys fluid, but a perished hose which goes to the differential pressure sensor on the DPF.

Anyway, to answer your question, I'd have thought it would be OK to continue driving it if it still feels fine. I'd avoid lots of short trips though just to reduce the chance of it getting clogged up too much. If your EML comes back on again after your get your Eolys topped up, then get that hose checked out as it's probably gone (seems to be quite common). Annoyingly, this part costs £125!!

Cheers
