The Scottish terrorist and the Welsh one are bleating on about ending austerity, does that mean no more means testing for benefits, lower bar for disabled unable to workers? More building, more money for local government and the NHS - what?

I switch off when I hear politicians pat themselves on the back for being 'progressive'. Progressive = spend money you don't have.

I always wondered the same as OP.

Why doesn't anybody ever ask left parties if they condone personal debt?! It's an obviously loaded question....but if they believe in correct debt management why would they be comfortable borrowing more on UKPLC credit card?!

It means borrowing money to spend money so that more people spend money and we get more tax and then spend more then pay off the deficit...

Didn't Syriza promise to 'end austerity' in Greece if elected. The public fell for the promise of free money and voted them in.
How's that working out for them?

The news used to be all about recession, now it's austerity.

Now i know an awful lot of people have become jobless, I'm not far off it myself due to the industry I work in. However for most of the nation it doesn't matter what words are used, they still get up in the morning, go to work and try to figure out where to get the best deal on that ipad/other treat their partner/child wants for their birthday next week.

100%

Before I am branded a "won't someone think of the children!" bore, I would like to point out I have no kids - never intended to breed, never will - but still believe we have a moral duty to try to leave the country (and planet) in decent shape for future life. Racking up ever more debt does not just simply sweep the problem under the rug for some other poor souls to deal with, but actually exacerbates the issue.

As our ancestors had to made sacrifices for the greater good - especially, but not only in the World Wars - so mush we.

I read this a lot on here about people spending all their money on iphones or ipads and it just smacks of envy I'm afraid. They're not expensive compared to many other things: garden shed, bicycle, loft ladder, new driveway, greenhouse, conservatory and all the other things that are obvious purchases and yet they seem to really rile people...despite the fact they're probably used more than most of the other things I've listed!

You can be a real man without an iPhone, but without a shed, garage or workshop I'm afraid you're just playing at it.

I think i read on another thread that we havent been in Austerity and we are still spending more than we earn.

From my perspective all we have done is try to cut back on spending some of that money.

It makes me laugh when they say an end to austerity, we've belong going through austerity light. Wait for the next term of labour/SNP to be over then we will really start paying.

Also has anyone explained to these benefit claimants that are moaning that when they are back in work the can expect to pay less tax under all parties except labour (and greens iirc), I'm guessing they know this but have no interest in working.

It would be helpful if they actually cut spending on things that were a waste - millions on NHS management levels and IT projects that are going nowhere, "art" for councils, Global Warming boll***s - lots of things that enable rich t**ts to get richer. Instead they spend with reckless abandon on those and cut money going to the most vulnerable?!?!

Quite amused by the "too far and too fast" bunch crowing that borrowing has increased.

Nice to see Steve Hilton (David Cameron's Dominic Cummings) saying that austerity is a terrible thing that kills people.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BA4LI0Ok988

Happily quoting the Guardian, stating austerity killed 130,00 people in the UK.

Some people might say that make him somewhere of a hypocrite
