I have just bought a 40gb 2.5" Hdd and USB enclosure.

Both of my computers recognise the drive (win 2000pro and XP home) yet both tell me it is not formatted.

I've tried right click and format on both machines. It goes through the motions and then tell me it hasn't worked.

I then tried through computer management still to no avail.

My last ditch attempt was to remove the hdd from my laptop and plug the new one in. This came up telling me there was no operating system. I knew this! I couldn't get into the cmos setup though.

I would also ike to partition it.

Anyone help?

I think you have to partition it before you can format it!

You can create the partition using computer management in XP.

Control Panel - Computer Management

In left hand pane, click on Disk Management - the drives will show in the righ window.

Right click on the USB drive and select Create Partition.

Voila!

(You may need to mount the drive first)

Good Luck!
