Audi A6 3.0 TDI - Turbo noise???

Our Audi A6 3.0 TDI Auto is approaching 98k miles and this morning the turbo started to make a strange noise, my better half described it as a "wooo/werring/howl" noise rather than a whistle (description given to me over the phone).

I've said not to drive the car until we can get it looked at but has anyone else experienced this and what did it turn out to be? My fear is the turbo is knackered and I'll have to fork out for a new one - likely cost?

This was exactly what happened to our BMW X5 - just before the turbo blew, sucked all the oil out of the sump and blew it out through the exhaust and cats. £1500 later (and that was cheap) we sold the car!

While I've not experienced this with an Audi, I'm confident you have a turbo that is going to fail and you would be wise to put some money aside. The challenge is, trying to work out how long it will last. Some turbos can be noisy for 2-years, others 2-minutes : /
