Have recorded a few performances at local open mic nights and put them on Facebook, using an iPhone 6.

I've been asked to record more and the iPhone hasn't really got enough power battery wise, unless I use a charger at the time.

Some of the areas are quite dark too - which doesn't help at all.

I only started doing this as my daughter plays at many of them with different folk, so I've been roped in really.

So, is there anything that I could get which would be simple to operate and do a better job?

I'd like a decent sound reproduction and the ability to improve the backgound lighting.

As you can probably tell, I know nothing about these things and I'm doing it for free of course.

You could try using a camcorder (battery will last long enough, image quality should be better), with an external mic (sound will be better) and a video light of some sort (you won't get the dark areas you mention). Just a thought...but then you will need to edit the (rather large) files, and you will need some software for doing that (MovieMaker, Final Cut Pro or similar) and learn how to use all the kit and the software. Then the files will probably be too big to upload to FB, so you will have to save at a lower quality, which may be not much better than your iPhone 6...

...I'd take the charger with you, find somewhere to plug in and save yourself a load of expense and hassle.

I think you're dead right and that is what I'm planning to do.

The other stuff is far too complicated for me.

Thanks

I've never used one so it might be rubbish hehe

But it looks like what you are after.

Another option is one of those power banks/battery cases so you can film whilst charging.

Or a long extension lead for my phone charger.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive plug in mic for the iPhone 6 or will the standard one do?

You'd be better off taking a line level feed from the main mixer. I presume there is one?
Anything that can record will work in this situation, and generally offers much better quality than trying to use a single mic. It's still not perfect, but should do the trick.

You're probably right.

I'll try just the iPhone for a couple and see.

The idea is to post some of these on a website each month - for folk to vote (like) which ones they like best.

The one(s) with the most likes will get a free recording session at our new studio - with a live lift.

Most definitely right biggrin

If you have a studio and are able to offer recording sessions.... you should have equipment to get a decent live recording? I'm not sure why you're looking to use (frankly) the least desirable recording method?

In the very least consider a portable recorder (Tascam DR07 or something similar) and record a line feed from the desk, then sync up the iphone video with recorded audio in post?

Only because, whilst the studio has all the gear, I don't want to interfere with it.

I just wanted to use something that I could take easily from home and download later. I live near to the places, so that's why it's down to me to do it as a trial run.

I'm not a musician, nor a sound guy - purely the guy who co-founded it, funded it and owns the site - so an iPhone 6 is about as technical as I get.

I leave the rest to the guys who know what they are doing. I make no pretence about my lack of skills in this.

If it takes off, then I'll get something more suitable or someone else to do the recordings at these nights.
