There's a lovely comment on that site about doing tracking shots. You have to clear everything out of the boot of the car so that nothing can fall out and hit the car behind. But he then says he used "a plank of wood" to prop the tailgate open. Just imagine if that had fallen out!

The wind reistance would have slowly closed the gas rams, which would mes sup the shot but not hurt the photographer. It does not look like they were using speeds of more than 10 or 20 anyway. No need.
