All,

I need a bit of advice. I sold my car back in January to a dealer in Milton Keynes. We signed a contract to confirm sale and noted on the contract that my plate was to be kept by me and put on retention. I filled out all the documents and gave them to him, along with the V5 (which they wanted visible, understandably, at point of sale). I also transferred them the £120 fee.

It's now the middle of May and my plate has still not been put on the retention. I've spoken to the dealer on multiple occasions and I've been fobbed off and lied to about it being in process with DVLA (who have confirmed it is not in process). I have various emails from the dealer as proof and as above I have the original signed contract with the information noted.

What can I do to get my plate back? Other than Trading Standards, my lawyer and calling the police. All of whom I have made aware of my initial issue but have not persued further (yet). DVLA haven't been much help and the call centre I speak to doesn't seem to be able to offer much guidance.

The car is a fantastic car - and it's still for sale - at a great price. I've had various emails about its history but it's getting the point the dealer would be the reason I put people off and not the actual car.

Thoughts on a postcard....

Lewis

If it was an outright purchase, did you send off the little slip to say you have sold it to the dealer? If you haven't then you may be able to complete the process yourself.

As far as I know, the car needs to be taxed for the registration to be put on a retention certificate, but keep in mind that the cost to retain a registration number has now changed (£80 for 10 years).

was the car taxed and mot'd when you sold it ? , the fee at that time would have been £105 for a years retention , i suggest taking matters further if it has gone on this long !!

If the OP hasn't sent the V5 slip off to say he has sold the car to the dealer then I guess he could request a new V5.

This is the best option. If the dealer is playing silly buggers with you just call the DVLA say you've lost the V5 and they will send you a new one for £25. Then use this immediately to apply to retain your plate. It should take a little over a week.

Once you've got the v5 back with the plate thats not yours give it to the dealer and send the bit off to say you've sold it.

Rule number 1 in plate retention, transfer it as soon as you know you want to put the car up for sale.
Rule 2, Only put the car up for sale once you've got the retention certificate and new V5 back.

Once you have the V5 , you can now apply to retain the number online. I did one about 4 weeks ago, docs were back within 3 days.
I believe you or the dealer can now also notify change of owner online.

Does your plate begin X7? If so, it seems to be being advertised with the car. I'm trying to confirm though, will let you know.

Looks like a great car though, and as you say a great price. If it were red I'd be on the phone to them. smile

edit: Their reply is that "it's on a private plate currently that will be coming off". Doesn't really help you much I guess, but at least it should be some comfort.

Thanks for the reply guys.

The dealer has finally replied with a holding email therefore will see what they say. I am going to guess it's on SOR and therefore they can't flick it over? I unfortunately dont have a copy of the V5C and yes, had the deal not moved so quickly (I changed jobs and had to sell within a few weeks) then I would have taken the plate off before hand.

It's a great car and I would chat to anyone about it.

Peter - thanks for your message.
