Which Tyre Size

Own 1992 Griffith with oz split rims
tyres just taken off are front 205/55/zr15
rear 225/55/zr16 but in the hand book it says 205/50/zr15 front and 225/50/zr16 rear is there any reason for have bigger profile and is the hand book right

It's a very small difference, it will increase the gearing slightly, improve ground clearence slightly but wont do anything to improve the handling, have you checked the price?

Which handbook is that? 205/55/15 and 225/50/16 rear would be normal.

Agree with this my 1992 has this and they are origional tyres

A while ago I phoned the factory for clarification on my 4 litre. The factory quoted different sizes for the 400 and 500 - 205's on the front are the recommended sizes for the 500. For the 4 litre the factory quoted 225/55/15 (or 225/50/15)front and 225/55/16 rear (OR 225/50/16).
