What's inside the S1 fuel pre-filter/ swirlpot?
Discussion
Stripping down Austin's fuel system from tank to main pressure supply line,
I removed this item and wondered whether to re-use it after a good swill out.
It seems to have done a sterling job straining out all manner of crud on the inlet side from the tank, whilst nice clear fuel runs from the bottom ( supply to pump inlet ).

I would like to know if anyone can tell me how the internals are constructed, and what degree of filtration it offers.
Is it worth re-using, or should I fit a large in-line filter, if the latter, what do you recommend?

Just to clarify Glen, that was in line AFTER the tank outlet and BEFORE the fuel pump? In which case I haven't seen it before and I can only assume someone fitted some type of filter vaguely like one of those glass drain down types you see on air lines etc. Does the body unscrew?
Yes Richard, it was installed between tank and pump inlet. The canister is quite high grade steel ( but not stainless ) and welded all round, so will not unscrew.
5/8" inlet from tank at top, there are two other connections on the top, one 5/8" ( 16mm ) and one 1/4" ( 6.4mm ). Both are crimped and sealed.
Outlet at bottom to pump is 5/8"
Not sure if original or aftermarket, possibly fitted when the tank cradle was replaced a few years back.
My reaction is that this is a commercial unit of some type which a previous owner has adapted to produce an in line filter. Looking at the connections which look adapted and that some have been sealed off suggests that. Someone else who realised that an in line filter was a VERY good idea. The modern option, at least the one I found from Demon Tweeks, is a little more attractive and a little easier to clean.....but less attractive to our pensioner pockets!

Can be supplied with connectors to fit the 5/8" ID pipe the TVR uses.
