wierd goings on , battery or alternator

Bit of a strange one today. Out for a run in the Chim this morning, sitting at some traffic lights, suddenly the radio cuts out, the fuel gauge drops to empty and the car won`t rev over about 2k. I looked in the rear view mirror but couldn`t see any space ships so Pulled over and turned it off. When I tried to restart it the battery was flatter than a witches tit. Got a jump start from someone, it started ok but as sooon as the leads were removed mr misfire returned. Called out the AA who again hooked up some jump leads, left his van hooked up to mine for about 10 mins and then we jump started it again, checked the charging, it was charging at about 13.5 volts. Drove it home ( about 4 miles ) all ok, turned it off , when I restarted it the alternator light came on, checked the charging again, now it`s about 11 volts. Plugged it into the Optimate for a few hours, now the alternator light goes out. Any ideas?.....

Have you checked the fusible link?

That can go and give you all sorts of wierd readings.

It is located on the front chassis near the starter motor.

You may have to jack the car up to get to it.

It is a small plastic box with a red wire going into each end of it.

Do a search for alternator on the Chim forum, you'll find many usefull bits of info. Especially about checking the 100amp fusible link..... This could be your culprit.
