Hi all!
My Partner and I have started a business and I'm in charge of managing the Twitter account. Any tips on how to spread the word? I've been on Twitter for a few years now myself and all I have is 40 followers including Callum Best (claim to fame). I know how Twitter works but what I still don't know how to put my voice out there into the Twitter Community that will gain attention. Any tips are greatly appreciated!

What type of business is it?

The main failure companies make with Twitter is a complete lack of interaction. Simply posting 140 character adverts will do nothing for you.

Follow everyone you can think of/find that is connected to your industry - many of them will follow you back.
Interact with the accounts you follow.
Keep it professional.
If it's something that could be seen as "local" get involved in tweeting local stuff too.

Ironically we specialise in car performance parts. I know there is BIG competition out there! I'm yet to hunt down the locals and tweet them but I don't want to 'hassle' them or seem annoying.

I would recommend checking out any networking #hastag days/hours for regions/industries. i.e I use #weddinghour on a Wednesday between 9-10pm.

I have seen a #yorkshirehour - maybe have a search for your region and see what comes up or even have a look at similar companies to see what they are tweeting?

Twitter and any social media page for a business can be a hard one to crack if not done correctly. Be careful with just following anyone you THINK might be interested in your company, if you do it too much you will get a temp ban from following and tweeting, same applies with replying to anyone or anything with a related # that you think looks interesting. When you tweet try and get as many relevant keywords in those 140 characters as you can as these are all picked up and also try and interact with your follower base you already have. The best way to grow is to do this organically and slowly. Please don't be tempted to buy followers as these are half dormant accounts and the other half couldnt care less about your products. Also as the poster said above try and get involved in discussions about local networking events or local car meet discussions online these will all bring or hopefully interest a few new customers. You could also try running a competition, you will get ALOT of new followers very quickly this way, granted they will not ALL be interested in your company just the free goodies but you will get a few that will want to check you out etc. I ran a friends Twitter account for a new business he launched last year and we ran a completion the interest was unbelievable and added around 250-400 followers a day for around 3 days now that may not sound like a lot but this was selling bamboo framed sunglasses and generated quite a lot of interest including a few sales. So as said earlier take it slow and don't try and rush the process it will grow with follower interaction and posting good quality content. My company currently offers social media management, pm me if you would like any more help or information smile

I ran the Twitter account for my legal staff recruitment agency. Some good advice above. I would add mix tweets with some good industry news which will be useful to your followers with your advertising messages.

I still use Twitter to help the new owners of my company.

I've been using Twitter personally for a while but mostly only to find jokes to use as my own on Facebook. I have an account for the pub but I don't really know how to use the hashtag... as in, what ones to use. With reference to your post, how do you find out what hashtags are "in use" and not just ones that I've made up? TIA.

Okay I will try and answer this in the best possible way. When you look down the left hand side of your twitter page you can see the " Top 10 Trending topics " now although there are only 10 hashtags to have a quick glance through twitter actually caters these trending topics to your interest so your more than likely to find something here to include in your daily post's to create some more interaction between follower base and your brand. Also there is a few tools out there that can really help you when marketing your brand or business on twitter. I run my own social media management and SEO company so a few that I use when conducting hashtag research for my own or a clients post's are HASHTAGIFY and TRENDSMAP. Hashtagify is great in which you can search for a single hashtag/ keyword and it instantly brings up all the other keywords that are currently being used and stats on them. Trendsmap shows you a real time global map which you can go right into a single area and find what hashtags are being used most. Trendsmap does cost but for me running a business dealing with social media everyday for clients and myself its not too bad at just $19 p/month and its a great help.
