Ok, another car I have included in my "possible cheap run around to buy" list...the Mk1 Focus. I particularly find the rare estate quite enticing. Have seen a 56,000 miler 03 reg hatch locally for £2.5K. At that price I cant imagine it will depreciate that much for a bit. Anyway, what are they like? I had a Mk1 1.6 Focus and it was the sweetest handling car I ever owned, beating my Mk1 Impreza and Alfasud to that title, but I have heard the ST is a tad "under=powered" for a hot hatch. I don't mind too much as I rate handling and feel above outright speed which you cant use... comments welcome!! esp anyone who has owned an estate
The ST170 is a great handling car, although that estate does sound quite expensive. However if it's an ST estate you want, you don't get a great deal of choice.
The ones to go for are the ones with the additional comfort and custom packs. That will get you heated leather Recaro's, great Xenon headlamps, climate control with a heated screen, and upgraded audio system.
The performance issue isn't so much the fault of the engine, more the gearbox it's mated with. The ratios are just too long, so you don't get the opportunity to run it between 5.5k and 7.2k rpm enough. Red line in 2nd gear takes you to 70mph. Shorter ratios would make the car feel much more lively.
