997 GTS Performance
Discussion
Hi all. I recently picked up a 997GTS and whilst I am loving so many aspects of the car I somehow feel a little underwhelmed with the performance or more specifically the acceleration.
With a 0-60 of 4.6 seconds I had expected to be wowed with the off the line and in gear performance.
Now I must confess I have only done around 5-600 miles in the car so far and have not yet fully explored all the aspects of the cars capabilities. I've spent a bit of time on the back roads and it is amazing, but from say 30 miles an hour on a straight road it pulls well and accelerates but not as hard as I expected. The power also seems pretty linear and i seem to be short shifting a lot of the time rather than ragging it to the red line like I did with my Cayman 2.9.
Can anyone else give me their thoughts on their cars and how best to get the most from it as I probably just need to learn how to drive!
For information my car has 5k miles on the clock and has had it 4 year service with plug change just before I picked it up so I hope engine wise it is in tip top condition.

The power pack upgrade is all top end, you have to rev the nuts off it.
But as you have found they are not that fast, ie not turbo fast.
Fast enough for the road though for sure.
Maybe even faster than. 997.1 gt3 to a ton due to the gearing also.
In the real world even with all that BHp it will only pull on a Cayman a couple of car lengths.

A GTS should not have to be revved to extract the best performance....the torque curve is flatter than the standard engine. I find the car suits PDK better than 'manuel' but won t go into that here....
:The car appears to have a very low mileage......maybe an 'Italian tune up' would help.......

Manual is great in the 997 GTS.
I've got an M3 as a daily driver.
Recently bought a 997.2 turbo as I race Superbikes and wanted something significantly quicker than the M3.
The normally aspirated 997 and 991 are not much quicker than an M3 or other performance cars.
For noticeable difference in performance you unfortunately need a 997 turbo or a Nissan R35 GTR

GTS is no Turbo for sure but it should feel a lot more thrilling at the top end than a 2.9 Cayman, especially from 5.5k RPM. It is possible that at 5k miles, your engine has not been run in properly so an Italian tune up means get out there and give it a good thrashing to loosen it up!
Drove mine at the weekend with several 7k+ RPM blasts after several weeks of not exceeding 5k RPM and it felt pretty lively and I have owned 2 997 Turbos so I know what really quick feels like.

Just done 1500 miles to the very top of Scotland and back in mine. No way you need anything quicker than a GTS on the road.
The power band on these powerkit cars is 6,400-7,500 There is a significant increase in performance in that range. Accompanied with annincreasenin aural output.
Pulling from 30mph in second gear is well out of that range and would explain why you aren't seeing/feeling any fireworks.

may as well sell the gT3 now.The power band on these powerkit cars is 6,400-7,500 There is a significant increase in performance in that range. Accompanied with annincreasenin aural output.

Hi Jackwood. I certainly don't think I need anything quicker overall, it was just that in my mind I expescted a 4.6 second car would feel quicker. My wife was driving it for the first time on her own yesterday and her comments were "OMG what a great car to drive and so much nicer than the Cayman, but it does not scare me as I thought it would when I floored it". Now SWMBO is not the most confident of driver but maybe that is what it is all about controllability, I know I certainly am not after insane.
Her only negative comment on the car was that she didn't like the buckets seats - 'god they are awful. Difficult to get in and out of and so uncomfortable. If the sports seats on the Macan are like that I don't want them!' At this point my daughter (junior petrolhead) and I cracked up at the thought of carbon buckets in a Macan.
Anyway, I'm going to take it out for a good thrashing and explore the upper reaches of the powerband!
I'll keep you posted.
I went from 7GT3 to 7GTS (manual 2wd) and the GTS is quite a bit slower - Fact. PDK makes it a bit quicker (i borrowed a PDK GTS for a week) but still doesn't quite have the legs of the GT3. The Powerkit is massively overrated.
In today's market the 997 GTS isn't really that quick. A PDK Boxster driven by Doris would probably smoke you off the lights. An Alpina D3 would probably too.

Hi Cmoose. Not 'can't be arsed to use it' at all. A lot of my journeys are relatively short and I don't like to rev the **it out of an engine when the oil is cold. Btw I chose manual and not PDK coz I wanted the involvement and certainly do plan to stretch where I can and when it's warm. My Cayman spent a good amount of time at the higher end of the Rev range so I'm probably calibrating to a car with more go and grunt than 265 bhp. I thought looking at the linear torque curve that the power was available lower down so I'm off to explore the 6-7.5k rev range.
If you're not bothered about economy then can't you get your ratios / final drive to GT3 spec?
It was interesting that someone posted figures of the 997.1 Power Pack versus a GT3 showing not much difference, but in the real world my GT3 feels way quicker tham my C4S did.
An alternative is to get a Sharkwerks. If it sounds louder, it feels faster

Well guys. I have to confess that it appears I have been driving like too much of a p**sy. After heeding the advise of my learned PH friends I went for a good hoon this afternoon and mashed the pedal for most of the way.
All I can say is this car likes to be treated mean from the off and responds well to a leaden right foot. Driven hard like this, I take back what I said about performance & gosh the gearbox and steering are nice!
The upper reaches of the Rev range do add extra oomph so I obviously need a proper lesson on torque curves and peak power and boy does it Rev round so freely, it's almost difficult to avoid bumping the redline.
Great car and I certainly don't need more power at the moment as I'm already well above legal speeds too quickly in third gear as it is.
I still feel the pick up when running at say 30 is not as awesome as I expected from 408bhp but if you learn how to drive the car properly (and I am just beginning) then it is a seriously quick bit of kit.
Oh and I averaged around 15.8mpg so was I giving it enough beans or am I still being too lame?
