Looking at used Cayman/Boxsters I'm struggling to make sense of the prices being asked relative to their spec.

Taking as an example something like a 5 year old Gen II car with say 50k on the clock I'd like your opinions on the UK values/price difference between the following.....

  • Cayman or Boxster (will Boxster prices have risen for the summer)?
  • 3.4 S or 2.9
  • PDK or Manual
  • Dealer or Private sale
I'm not asking for opinions on which you think is best, just how much higher or lower the used car price would be for those options listed above.

Thanks.

Convertible prices don't change very much with the seasons these days. (Roofs don't leak like the old days and many more convertibles are sold, especially in UK)

I reckon a 3.4 at 5 years old will still be worth £2,000 more than a manual

I reckon a PDK car at 5 years old will still be worth £1,000 more than a manual

The dealer/ private question is not so simple. It's all about warranty. At a Porsche main dealer you might pay up to £5,000 more than private. At a non-franchised dealer that probably reduces to about £2,000

And separately from your questions, which rightly focus on the big points, my general rule is that "optional extras" depreciate at least twice as fast as the car itself.

Wouldn't disagree with that as a general rule but some extras are much more "desirable" than other. PCM and large wheels for example hold their price relatively well (so if you are not fussed you might be able to get a better deal on one without) and PCCBs are a marmite choice so you might, if you are keen, pick one up for practically the same price as one without.

i was looking at two 987s, a '55 plate at £16k and an '07 plate at £19k. both below 40k miles, and both in very nice condition.
The '07 had PCM, full leather, cruise, auto dim mirrors and 19" wheels over the spec of the '55 (Bose, heated seats, leather dash top, xenons, reverse sensors.
i guess the extras accounted for less than half of the £3k price difference.
