Tax Return - online?
Discussion
Hi all,
Trying to submit my tax return online. I have registered for the service at www.gateway.gov.uk, and activated with the code through the post, but totally unsure as to how to go about putting in my figures!
There's "Service", "Your details", and "Secure Mail", none of which seems to allow you to go any further. Help files are worse than useless!
Anybody done this already and can help me out?

Well, if you are successfull you might get this page:
Thank you for your donation to the coffers of GB Ltd. We say donation becuase you choose to pay, thousands of the unwashed goits who live in GB ltd seem quite happy not to choose to pay, but with suckers like you who choose to donate we don't care about them!
We will be spending your money on a new draft of pointless legislation, not to hellp GB ltd, but to keep us in a job, and make sure Labour are relected next election.
You should feel proud that your hard earned cash is going to be given to some 19 year old chav on a council estate with 5 kids who has never done a days work in her life. We've already given her a free house, so we thought a bit of cash would help her along in her pointless useless existence.
However don't bother to call us if you need any help from us, we are only there to help the pointless in pursuit of the usless. Should you need a police officer then i'm afraid we can't send one round becuase we spent all the money that should be going to the police on some bloody inquiry into whether useing black pens in job centres was racist.
Once again, we'd like to say thank you for being your donation.

Go to www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk
you should see "Self Assessment" on the left hand side menu.
Click on it and it will ask for your login details.
Bear in mind the online site can only cope with a basic return. For anything more complex, you can still send the return via the internet, but you will need some software such as Taxcalc in order to prepare the return.

Cheers, got it.
It's very odd as you have to register on the Government Gateway site, then go to the IR site to fill in the tax return. Threw me for a minute.
Mrs.NCOT isn't happy, she kept trying to validate her account on the Gateway yesterday, but it refused her code (she was within the 28 day limit of the code). Rang the support line this morning and they say she needs a new code and new login info - chances of getting before end of Jan deadline? Slim

Perfect
NB If you'd replaced 'chav' with 'overseas gentleman' people would howl in outraged indignation at you. An interesting difference I think.
Site has been fine since.
I've just submitted my return but it seems to be taking a while coming back and saying it was accepted.
Anybody know whether this is an automatic thing or do I have to wait until Monday until somebody checks it by hand?
Cheers, first year I've done it online, seems a lot less hassle.

Im sorry but you've just given me the biggest laugh in ages...
THe government, computers, online and working dont make me laugh.... do what i did and hand it in to the bint on the IR reception yourself and get a receipt..
so when they loose it ( as they will) you have proof you gave it to them.
They are so fecking useless last year i was a bit short so handed the return in without the cheque. when i got the demand for the return and fine. i simply turned up with the receipt
and said well look i handed it in... fine canceled and paid it later
i'd trust govt online I.T. about as much as Tony B-liar..
Cheers

Well, have the page printed from where it said it had been received, so that's okay.
On the slightly more poo side of things, have just realised that electronic transfer of money will take 3 days. Silly me for assuming electronic transfers ("pay immediately") would actually go immediately, but no. Guess that's a fine for me

Did mine online yesterday.....worked out how much I owed them...remitted that....however there does seem to be a problem.
For the last 20 hours I have received this....
Your Tax Return has not yet been accepted.
If you are not able to wait for a response, you can log out and return to Online Tax Return - Self Assessment later, in order to confirm that the Inland Revenue has received your Tax Return.
If you wish to wait, you can check if your Tax Return has been accepted by selecting Check Progress below
.....and of course yesterday their phone lines were always engaged. Now when i go back into the self assessment part to 'redo' my return it just takes me to the submit page.............

If you have paid all you owe for 2003/04 and the first 2004/05 Payment on Account by 31 January 2005, you will not be liable for the £100 late filing penalty. However, the Inland Revenue may not realise this initially and charge the penalty anyway. But, if you can confirm that the tax was paid on tiome, you will be able to get the penalty cancelled.
Who would HAVE thought it indeed!
Last year I picked up two new clients who had tried to file their returns online at the last minute. One made such a cock-up of her entries that she ended up with a tax investigation. Neither of the individuals involved had made adequate copies of what they had entered so when the Inland Revenue asked for a breakdown of a particular amount entered in a specific box, the tax payer was unable to answer the question.
If you are filing on-line, make sure you keep a record of what entries you made in what boxes just in case you have to explain your entries to a tax investigator.
