£3 million for a stainless watch. Truly ridiculous.

Honestly, at that sort of price the case material is really kind of irrelevant unless you're talking vulgar diamond bling. After all, you can only fit so much precious metal into a watch case!

I know what you mean but actually it is all about the case material. Almost nobody buys a stainless Patek simply because, as you say, the value is in the workmanship going into the often invisible movement. The amount of gold (or whatever) in the case is relatively small.

This means that the production run of steel cased Pateks is exceptionally low, often being 2 or three units. There are enough serious and well heeled collectors to pay very high prices for what is effectively a unique piece to add to their collection.

So in this case (excuse the pun) steel is worth more than gold.

I really like my stainless steel Patek although technically it is classed as a sports watch by Patek, and good for rough and tumble :-) I use my World Time as an everyday watch.

How about this for a modern watch? Interesting engineering but it feels a bit weird on.

Unlikely Adrian, the watch was one of two. The other is in the Patek museum, effectively this is the only watch available. So 'commercially unique'...
