Do I need to tell my insurers?
Discussion
I recently fell off a ladder and fractured a vertebrae. I am hoping to be out of hospital soon but will be required to wear a brace for 2-3 months. My consultant has said I can drive if the pain isn't affecting my judgment which is something I won't know until I am out. He has said I do not need to notify DVLA. Do I need to tell my insurers that I will be driving in a back brace? I am insured with Aviva if that is relevant. Thanks in advance for advice
Former Aviva staff here not that it's particularly relevant.. Even if you tell your insurers they are NOT allowed to discriminate against you or change their terms so there's nothing to lose in telling them. I have had to have an amputation and I'm probably a couple of months away from being able to drive again . I've already told Aviva and they have no problem with it, I've also told DVLA and neither do they. My local rehabilitation centre do a driver assessment which I'll do voluntarily but I don't have to do it.
You'll be absolutely fine.

To be certain you need to check your own policy documents, but every insurance policy I've ever had has only required me to tell my insurer about a medical condition if it's one that I also have to tell the DVLA about. From memory, you don't have to tell the DVLA about any condition which is expected to last 3 months or less.
Hope you have a speedy recovery.
