Tornado out of Newcastle

The company I work for has a big office pretty much at the end of Newcastle Airport runway. As I left work last night I heard an aeroplane take off that clearly wasn't the usual Benidorm bound chav-taxi. I looked up to see an RAF Tornado flying over our multi-storey car park. Incredibly loud, so much so that I could still hear it long after it had disappeared into the clouds. I'm not sure if it had touched down or just performed a low fly-pass.

Anyway, I already know it's a cool story. But, any idea why it might have been there, other than to stop for a Greggs pastie.

It's not the first time a Tornado has visited Newcastle Airport, and often it's not out of choice;

Perhaps they've only just finished blowing up the tyres and scraping the feathers off this one?

I'm pretty certain that the airport is one of the emergency landing sites if the RAF have an inflight "issue".

Any airport with a long enough runway becomes an emergency landing site if you have a serious inflight "issue".
