Tunnel hunting

Is it just me, or is driving through a tunnel with the roof off one of the best things to do in a TVR. I have done the Tyne tunnel, the Necastle railway station tunnels, but on found a corker on Saturday... At the roundabout between the A69 and the A68, between Hexham and Nexcastle is a farm shop called Brockbushes (nice coffee and cakes!) and the one-way exit route takes you back under the A69 via a 50m long, single width steel-lined tunnel, perfect acoustics !

Anybody else out there have a favourite tunnel..

I recommend the Mersey Tunnel! 2 miles of tunnel fun

However the first time you go through there, I recommend not going in a convoy with loads of people taking photos at the same time - I thought there were Gatso's under there!!!!

I'm over in Norway at the moment - Tunnel Heaven!
Loads of really long tunnels that seem to go on for ever... the best one I've been through so far is 14km long..

Cardiff Bay - fantastic! this tunnel has best point - you can't see the exit when at the entrance.

So glad its not just me!!

The main plus on the little tunnel is that there is no other traffic... stop at the entrance, loads of revs and grand prix start.... Girlfriend thinks i'm mad!!

My 'quick run out' takes in the Monmouth tunnel (A449) and the Brynglas tunnels on the M4. Problem is they're both flat sided, and I really want to try a single carriageway tube-section tunnel .

I've always found it most thrilling when I dethrottle. Leaving the throttle a little open so that raw fuel finds its way into my hot exhaust. Pops, bangs and burble, IMO much nicer than raw, flat out growl.

Best to find a tunnel where you can do both of course!!

No a tunnel but possibly the next best thing. Potto Hall about a mile from where I live; big walls either side of the road and canopy of trees overhead. Quiet road with a junction at the top so you always have an excuse to give it some and back off in time without going over nsl

Blackwall and Rotherhithe are good as they are so small and comfined compared to newer "safe" tunnels like Dartford.

Rotherhithe is especially good, as it has oncoming traffic and you can scare the bejesus out of oncoming cars!

There is quite a nice open tunnel coming back from Brighton on the A26 (I think) too, with a roundabout at each end for maximum hooning pleasure!

Is that the wee one to the left and a larger tunnel going in the same direction, an exit from a terminal or something?

There's always Petworth - no tunnel, but very narrow streets lined with tall stone walls and houses. I took a Tuscan through there on Saturday and it was just a cacophony of popping and crackling

Have also done the St Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland in my Griff - it's about 20km long, but very busy and has oncoming lorries (one of the tunnels was closed due to a fire). Very disappointing

Any of the Italian/French border ones. Frejus, St Bernard. Might manage the Mont Blanc in the summer, it was closed last time I was down there. And then on the way down to Genova and beyond, fan-earbleeding-tastic

How long before the residents in Petworth get their own Gatsos and street furniture, I can never resist a 2nd pass through the village either, they must be sick and tired of us

Hope they've invested in triple-glazing!
