Been looking closely at the new Q7 brochure with an eye to replacing my old 4.2Tdi one.

At launch, only a 276bhp 3.0Tdi will be available, with a de-tuned 3.0Tdi and the e-tron to come later. I cannot find any references to any engine bigger than the 3.0Tdi becoming available at all. Does this mean that the e-tron is now the direct replacement for the 4.2Tdi? The e-tron has a similar purchase price increment over the 3.0Tdi as the old 4.2Tdi did, and the e-tron has supposedly better performance AND better consumption.

Just wondering if this means it's the new top of the range engine option and the V8 Tdi is no more?

Seems that way; the rumour mill likes the idea that the upcoming SQ7 will use a version of the electrically turbocharged 3.0 used in the RS5 TDI concept.

An SQ7 you say? scratchchin

"SQ7 will launch some time next year, powered by a V8 diesel engine featuring ‘e-boost’ electric turbochargers"

Sounds good to me, though as you say the engine is not confirmed as yet. Be a shame though if it's not possible to buy the V8 Tdi on a normal model, it's a really great engine.

I agree, Q7 and A8 with the 4.2 TDI are very satisfying to drive. The engine feels really well suited to moving a big car around.
