Hey guys

Does anyone run MAF with their ECU (megasquirt, canems etc etc)

Looking at getting mine setup by Dale at Bailey Motorsport and he's mentioned in email that they recommend a modern Ford MAF from American V8s.
But I can't remember seeing any of you guys running one?

I think you get better fuel control but after reading loads of posts you loose that instant punch when you hot the gas .

I'm not really fussed about economy or MPG, if it's reliable and as powerful as possible then i'm open to anything really? Just couldn't really remember seeing any Chims with one fitted?

I thought you replaced the original AFM with a sleeve and temp sensor for most aftermarket ECU's?

Interested in knowing any other benefits out of pure curiosity. MAF's aren't the cheapest of components and are known to fail, so would this be adding another unnecessary complication?

Hi, be interested in seeing how you get on with this as Dale was telling me about it last month.
PS; it's Bailey Performance not motorsport, different company.

That's what I meant wink

Not sure if I'll do it yet. If it's worth the expense and time to fit then I will

Thats not an issue on a decent AFM, the hot wire element has virtually no lag- certainly it will respond faster than the engine mechanics can. The nasty Chinese replicas are another matter.

IMO one of the best ways to monitor air coming in, all manufactures do it for a reason

Can someone explain the difference between the two fueling systems ? Are you talking about MAP and TPS or something else .

yeah i've been reading about it and it seems they are on all production cars but most people on here just seem to remove them and run with TPS and Alpha N? Ill try to get hold of Dale today and see which make/model they've used or can be used with Megasquirt.
I don't know if it's better than running map though? The EFI Megqsquirts come configured for MAP so I could just run a hose down to it from the plenum?

MAF is better for accurate fuel calibration as it measures what the engine actually uses- not something that is calculated on a MAP or TPS reading, so a MAF set up will cope better with changing engine conditions after the car has been mapped. Both MAP and TPS are not as accurate, but do away with any intake restrictions the MAF may generate, buts ask why do you think MAF is used on a lot of road engines still?

This ^ even the likes of Honda went from MAP sensing too AMM/AFM years ago and they know a thing or two about engine management PGM-FI

ok thanks. Looks like I'll just get one and stick it in the same place as the original. The Ford V8 ones aren't restrictive apparently from what I can see reading online.
Just got to work out which one to buy now, want to get it all sorted for the track day on the 15th June.. time flies

To be honest I'm really in two minds because mine was also running really nice, I don't know if the MAF would actually give any performance increase or if it's just for drivability. If it's just drivability i don't really need it.
I need to sort the idle valve out more.

Its the June 15th one Daz in the meet section, on a Monday are you coming? Drive down and could meet Qbee someone to convoy?

I doubt there would be much performance increase maybe a bit in the lowdown/midrange but it will be smooth as silk and probably give you a few more mpgs the more sensors you can add the better IMO

ok cool, maybe i'll leave it for now then and just get the idle valve fitted. I'm not fussed about MPG and it does't run that bad, well it does but it needs mapping again now i've changed the plenum.
Changing the plenum back to alloy has made it pop and bang loads more on overrun now, weird, i wouldn't have thought it would make any difference to that. I like it though smile

Drive-ability IMO for the same reason you would choose sequential inj for example
