I've got a slight dilemma. I've got a short 5 month contract starting in March as a post-doc in a reaserch lab in manchester. I lived in manchester when i did my PhD but wrote up at my parents home (~25 miles away) and I quite fancy moving back into manchester. However my parents have said why not commute in and save my salary so that after the 5 months i'll have a few £k knocking about and i'll be able to look for a longer term contract without the pressure of impending bankruptcy. I hate renting places because its dead money but at the same time i don't want to live with my parents for 5 months. Not sure what to do; any level headed advice?

Five months?! You're considering moving back home for five months?

I'd just try to rent the cheapest place possible, or even share a place.

Head says stay with your folks and save the money. Even if you don't use it, it's something towards a deposit on a house some time down the line.

However, after my first year at Uni the few weeks living back at home during the summer were hellish and I couldn't wait to get away again!

Sound advice.

Seriously - no matter how abominably awful it will be moving back in with the parents it will be for a finite period. Over and done with in just five months and the money will be sat in your bank account making you feel damn good...

Got to agree with Don here (which isn't unusual, to be honest).

Distasteful though the idea of moving back to your parents is (no matter how well you get on with them), you'll be very hard pressed to find a place to rent for as little as 5 months. 6 months is generally the minimum period you'll get a place for.

Thats the other point, i'd have to rent for longer than i need. It just depresses me the thought of living at home again The money would be nice though. My GF lives even further away from Manc than i do and "shacking up" might give her ideas.....

The other advantages of staying with your parents,

Free laundry service
Free meal service
Free housework service
Free gas and elecric.

Move in with your parents, you know it makes sense.

I moved back home for a month while my new flat was finished. 9 months later I was still there waiting for the builders and going out of my mind...

tricky one this. I lived with my folks for just over a year, when I was working in the City. Commuted into town every day, didn't go out much, did running and exercise when I got home, had quiet weekends etc. It was bl**dy boring, but good for the old bank account. After about 12 months, I bought a Chimaera 4.0 (2nd hand of course), for cash.

So what's more important? Having a good social life, o living with parents and having a few quid up your jumper later on?

Wouldn't do it again, mind you.

Rent is just wasting your own cash.

I have lived on building sites for exactly that reason

My parents are fantastic but I could never live with them for more than a long weekend

The other disadvantages of staying with your parents,

Grilling about that packet of 3 you left in your jeans
Having to be home at 6 sharp for your tea
Creases ironed down the front of your 501s
Playstation turned off mid-game to save leccy

Get out while you can, you know it makes sense!!

Nowt wrong living with parents. But it all depends on the situation. I've just moved back in with my parents, after living away for 5 odd years, a combination of Uni and then working in Newcastle. But I am fortunate that i actuall like living with my parents and it allows me to do a lot of other things, such as go out, work on my cars etc. Also my parent's house has signifigantly more space than my flat. My parents are also quite happy to let me come and go as I please.

But it does all depend on your own circumstances. I have friends who just could never bear to live with their parents again, and if I were them I would feel the same. Also depends on how old you are. I'm only 23 and have a long way off until my 24th.

Oh. If you G/F is going to stay your G/F you are going to need to see her. So why not use the fact to stay over at hers two or three nights a week giving you a break from your folks....and them a break from you.

You're an adult. If you can sort it this way just tell them you're doing it. They'll get over the shock...

Having said, one disadvantage is not being able to bring back random birds and nail them. If my mum hears the slightest shuffle of love action, I am in for the grilling. It's like I'm still a little boy, but it is cheap. To boot, I have shot myself in the foot by putting in a multipoint cage in the car. "Watch your head love" "Dong dong donk, ouch, ding ding, almost done"
