Can someone other than a Ph techie bloke (ie...in plain, no geek speak English) explain why I have to log in every time I visit The PH forums.

I'd like to see this too.

I saw some instructions from RacingPete in another thread and tried to follow them but obviously failed.

The piece of information that remembers you are logged in (a cookie in tech speak) has/had a very short timeout.

It should be fixed now. Try logging out, then logging in again (and click the 'remember me' box). This should get you a brand new cookie with a much longer lifetime. smile

See, it's all about biscuits ...

Heh - I can do no techie speak too wink

Here is my anology...

You are a member of a health club (PistonHeads), as part of that health club are lots of features, such as a gym (classifieds) and a swimming pool (forums). When you want to use the swimming pool you are given an orange band to wear on your wrist (a cookie) which means you have to either leave the pool after 60 minutes or go and get a new colour to extend your stay. If you just splash around in the pool for 60 minutes, then along comes an attendant and kicks you out, and you have to get a new colour band to have another 60 minutes (click login).

Now if you go and visit the toilet (My Stuff) or get something from the vending machine (Post on forums) then as you come back into the pool, you get given a new colour band to extend your stay for 60 minutes... and if you keep doing this then you will always get the latest colour band and never get kicked out.

Now we have decided as Health Club administrators that allowing people to visit the swimming pool for only 60 minutes is too short, they like to splash around for much longer - so we are now giving out pink coloured bands that are valid for splashing for 15 days.

But you can only pick one of these new ones up from the health club reception (PistonHeads main login page) and thus have to exit the Health Club (Logout) and go back in again (Login) to get them. Just visiting the toilet or vending machine or being kicked out and re-entering the swimming pool is not enough to get a pink band... you have to exit completely.

OK, thanks RP - I think I understand and I've now been to the home page and logged back in and, hopefully, got my pink band.

There didn't used to be these wrist bands. Bloke on the door recognised me and just let me in. He knew I only ever came for a swim so didn't pay much attention.
