Don't be afraid of VW Phaeton's
Discussion
I thought I would let you all know about some positive news regarding VW Phaeton 3.0 V6 ownership. I recently bought a 77k mile 09' Phaeton second hand from outside the VW dealer network. The car had been VW dealer serviced up to 41K miles and the rest of the mileage up to service time at 80k miles had been carried out at a small garage by the previous owner. When I bought it it looked like a straight car with a reasonable service history.
Against my better half's advice, I decided to have the 80k mile service done at my local VW dealer in Norwich and was quoted £259 inc for an 10k mile oil service and 40k mile inspection service. I also booked a combined air con service and brake fluid change for £100 inc. I was also expecting a long list of things that needed doing after the fault codes were checked, although nothing was actually causing me a problem day to day. I just believed the general consensus that Phaetons are trouble.
When I picked the car up this afternoon I was shocked to say the least to hear from the service adviser that "there is absolutely nothing wrong with it" and that "it is a really nice car". Now, I may be lucky but I think it goes to prove a number of things a) Phaetons can live outside a dealer network as long as they are serviced by professional small garages with good mechanics b) Not all second hand car dealers are crooks that sell clapped out high depreciation luxury cars, and most surprisingly c) not all VW main dealers make up things to change on expensive cars because that think they can get away with it.
I have been so impressed by the VW dealers good service I will continue to take it there in the future. I will also go back to the used car dealer I bought it from, when my wife needs to change her car.
For some reason I am now drawn to the thought of owning a W12 Phaeton also. I'm not sure if I will be pushing my luck though.....

As someone who has run a V10 5 litre twin turbo diesel Phaeton for about 8 months now I couldn't agree more they are fantastic power luxo barges. I was going to get mine re-mapped to produce just under 1000Nm of torque at just over tick-over but I haven't bothered because it's quite fast enough.
I bought it to do the University run from Portsmouth to Norwich and I get out the other end like it was a 10 minute drive, the cooling massage seats are sheer luxury when its a warm day, and keeping to the limits (very hard) on motorways etc it returns 36 MPG on the University Run.
I'm going to upgrade the already stonking HiFi system in it and have to say I'll probably always have a Phaeton as my daily come everything bar hooning car.
According to a few knowledgeable people the V10 is a better proposition to the W12 but as they are both as cheap as chips, buy it, enjoy it, and if it goes seriously wrong (quite unlikely) throw it away and buy another.
