I have what seems to be fairly common VAG fault with my 6 year-old A6. Several warning lights are on and the closest diagnosis is a problem with the ABS unit, probably the pressure sensor. The Audi repair quote is enormous. Any suggestions on an independent for diagnosis and repair?

Many thanks.

I am not sure this will help but worth telling you.My wife has a Ford S-Max and had a few warning lights/messages come on the dash including ABS and power steering.I noticed the power steering reservoir was half an inch below the minimum line.Topped it up to max and never seen the warning lights/messages again.

Thanks but this is a common fault on this generation of VAG units. I had the same on a Passat - solved that by selling the car on ebay for a fantastic deal.

Audi need their balls chewed and spat out for this. These pumps have been failing for years. The problem is the wiring inside the shuttle valves is far too fragile and if one breaks it shuts down the whole system.

The pump is not just used for ABS, it is also linked to the traction control and limits slip by braking the appropriate wheel using the ABS pump. Mine went on my '98 A6 Quattro. This was about 8 years ago and Audi wanted £1100 for a pump. Utterly scandalous money.

I picked one up on the bay for a hundred quid, but you have to be very careful; there are dozens of subtle variation so you have to get the exact number off the pump to get it right.

I do a lot of classic Audis and have never replaced an ABS pump on any of them; not once! Why would you change this and make them so unreliable and expensive. I think it's deliberate built in obsolence. Yet another to add to the "known faults" brigade.

Hi Chris where in the S/E are you? you need a PH'er with vag/com or Ross tech, or if you can wait a week or so I've got a Delphi DS150E coming, it's scary what Audi say, I look after 53 vehicles at work 11 are Audi and a number of years ago before we got Ross-tech we had an A6 just out of warranty that the glow plug light would not go off after £730 later having had glow plugs, relays wiring and a strong smell of bull5hit from main dealer I fitted a brake light switch!!!!! bingo common fault sir the parts dept said!!!

I see you're in the south east. Try giving Nick at Youngs Garage in Wrotham a ring, knows his stuff and always treated me well. It's a small shop and they're pretty busy but hopefully he'll be able to help you out http://www.youngsgarage.biz
