348’s and colour coded skirts

I’ve noticed some early 348’s have what look like black plastic side skirts, front splitters and rear valances, whereas most others are colour coded. IMHO the colour coded ones look much better with the others looking quite dated.
Was the colour coding always a factory option or did Ferrari start to supply it as a standard finish at some point in the car’s lifetime?
