Having kerbed my offside rear wheel over the weekend I need to get it refurbed in order to get over being angry with myself. I have the Sportdesign "GT3" split rims. There is apparently a choice: I can either have the rim refurbed then sprayed the same colour as the spokes, which can be done in around an hour, or the wheel can be removed and recut, not resprayed, which can be done in around a week. Apparently the difference is minimal but you can tell if you know what to look for. The latter of course is more expensive and a real pain as the car will need to stay in the garage for a week. The former strikes me of being a "botch job" but is much easier, and if I re-kerb them again soon (grrr) the whole process is much easier to redo. Has anyone else found themselves in this dilemma? What advice would you give on the two processes in general?

Unlucky!
Has the protruding rim edge gone all jaged?
I went and did the same thing. Once I move house, I'm going to either Jack the Porsche up and use wooden blocks to ensure the under side doesn't get damaged and have the 3 piece rims ALL refurbed to make sure they match. Alternatively I could buy the original rims and tyres for the car to sit on for a while.
I hope that if they end up shaving metal off the rim- it doesn't look too weird compared to ther other rims.
Really annoyed with myself and the SUV that made me brake hard and end up tramlinging into a kurb!

www.camtune.com told me they can do the exchange-thing for around £150 a corner, and they keep some in stock.

I'm getting mine done by Reading OPC though as it's going to be in the garage anyway (for the RMS *again* - only 6 months after the last replacement! ) so I'll have a courtesy car...
OPC said it'd be nearer £120 per corner.

The 'originals' are painted centre with a laquered alloy rim. If you have loads of money then refurb them 'properly'.i.e. polish out the kerfing then relaquer the newly polished alloy.

Most wheels are all over paint and laquer. If you are going to make a habit of kerbing them then you may as well paint them as it will be cheaper and quicker to do. My first lot were painted when I bought the car and I had them done through a contact who is a BMW main dealer's 'wheels' man. Minor kerb rash - £30 cash all four wheels.

My new car has laquered alloy rim sections so I will just take extra special care to avoid the kerbs....

I agree, he did an amazing job on my 993RS speedlines - Make sure you anodise the aluminium center part instead of polish and laquer - lasts for years instead of months!

For Pukka or rare wheels Diamond Styling the only place for 3 piece , especially Speedline ........annodising looks slightly different when compared side by side but lasts for ages , been using my daily set for 3 years since he did them show absolutely NIL corrosion on rims ......one or two bolts now discolouring [ will replace myself]
IMHO if the wheel has 'bad'[ not terminal] damage the rest make an effort , but people alwayd end up going to Chris to have them put right !!!

Holy crap. Oh my good grief. That's a lot of money.

I have 2 sets of Speedlines. One set is in good nick. The other has corrosion around the bolts but is otherwise fine.

I think instead of spending £1200 on refurbing, I would probably go for a set of brand new BBS race wheels which I understand you can get for £2200 from Germany, and sell one set of the Speedlines.

Once corrosion sets in around the bolts on the speedlines, the next step is for the wheels to allowing air to escape and lose quite a few lbs per square inch over a week.
I couldn't part with my wheels for the 6 weeks that diamond styling wanted..i ended up going elsewhere.
The rebuild cost is £250+ per wheel, part of this is replacing 40 x bolts per wheel at £2 each.

Speedlines in need of a rebuild are not worth much as every now and again a serviceable set appear in Ebay for around or less than rebuild cost.

So you won't be making me an offer on them then, Paul?

Diamond Styling want £150 per wheel and need them for a week and they won't keep the car during that period. Disregarding the price, as I don't have another set of wheels, that means I can't use them. My only option seems to be either have them sprayed rather than machined, or wait until a service and have them done by the OPC at £200 per wheel.

Unlikely,,,a decent set of speedlines and a set of BBS is probably the way to go....seriously try selling them either way someone has got to pay £1000+ to get them serviceable.

This was the problem I had, try jasmine, they have quite a few wheels in stock and offer an exchange service.

Guys

I have a spare set 17" Cup 1's with Bridgestone S02 tyres on as wets if you need a set to keep the car on whilst others away. Must say, that the tyres are probably not road legal, but if anybody is stuck....

Based in Egham.

Very kind of you thanks Mel. I'm going to take a good look at them tomorrow and decide whether it's worth all the drama. I'm tempted to have them painted now then remachined when it's in the garage for a service later in the year.
