Pupils hold second demonstration

Education chiefs have condemned a second pupil protest outside a school as "irresponsible."

About 40 year 10 and 11 pupils stood outside the gates of Hirst High School in Ashington, on Monday morning.

A similar protest, involving 100 pupils, was held on Friday over rumours that discos and non-uniform days were to be banned by new head Lesley Craig.

Northumbria Police monitored the protest, but said there was no trouble. The crowd dispersed before lessons.

Northumberland County Council said the action was "based on unfounded rumours of such issues as the banning of non-uniform days and discos".

At one point during Friday's demonstration eggs were thrown at police, but Monday's protest was more subdued.

The council condemned what it said was the "irresponsible actions of what appears to be a planned protest by a small minority of pupils outside the entrance".
They had a couple of the hoodlums on the radio as I came home and it was beyond a joke what they were saying.

Apparently they were desperatly upset that they couldn't go to school wearing as little as possible but ensuring that the fabric they did have was endorsed by popular labels to help the "tsunami thing" and that their head couldn't rule the school properly. Removing "discos and stuff" meant that the kids didn't want to go to school as it removed the fun element.

What on earth is going on where children strike from school over a potential punishment/rumour? It's a privledge getting an education not a right IMO, it's about time children learnt that again!

Discos and non-school uniform days were dire at our school. The disco's all consistend of popular vs unpopular people and would generally end in a pretend love fest with teachers acting "groovy".

There was one girl sent home once at the comp for inappropiate dress on a non-school uniform day for turning up in a Bikini top and jeans...

No great loss for them either way, they sit in the bus-stands and drink "alcholic" drinks...

Tom, shall have an answer for you soon btw
