Hi

Please can you help?
I am confused about which company to use for my engine upgrade. I have budgeted about3K for the job but am not sure whether to go for PTP 165 or the DVA equivalent. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Steve

You can also get a Bell & Colvill 160 upgrade for the same money - also worth considering.
Sorry I'm probably making your decision harder!

I've got the PTP 165 kit, very very impressive and decent value for money. Speak to Simon Watts and tell him that you were referred by Stephen Docherty, he'll give you all the details, talk you through it. The quality of their work was excellent.

Bell & Colvill "160" only makes 150. Nowhere on their literature does it say that the 160 refers to BHP.

Raceline/Lakeside 160 is nice (powerful AND tractable) if they still sell it, but if I was buying I'd buy from DVA as I like to get my fingers dirty and Dave is a hands-on man.

Yup, I agree the B&C conversion doesn't state 160 bhp anywhere - however it's a decent upgrade and also worth considering. You pays your money, you takes your choice. I think the previous owner of my car (B&C 160) may have had it dyno'ed, I'll see if I can find a printout at home. If you are able to, see if you get a drive in the different variants and see which suits you best.

Hi All

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. I have spoken to Simon at PTP and he has told me a great deal about their upgrade and it looks like that is worth pursuing. Please keep them coming.

I have experience of both PTP & DVA.

Had my PTP 165 kit fitted by PTP and had endless problems. The DVA kit worked perfectly from day one & I would wholeheartidy recommend him to anyone.

Speak to Dave and I'm sure he'll be able to answer all your queries.

Definitely speak to Dave. Noone knows the K-series better and he's a top bloke who won't take your eyes out.

Wouldn't disagree that he's a top bloke but there are at least two cars that have had the 150 upgrade that have had problems with the 'bottom end' of the engine. I wouldnt put that set-up on my car without a new chip coz the standard map/lotus ecu is 'stretched' & could run lean and hot.

There have been numerous rantings on upgrades but one thing to keep in mind is potentially if you are stressing your K more, you will have more reliability issues, regardless of which options you go for.

Saying that, i went for the ptp170 and in the 2-3 months i've had it, it has been great.

There are plenty of people out there who criticise the PTP165 (or maybe it's the same people, very frequently) but it would appear that problems encountered were from cars converted 2 years or more ago.

My own car is one such - but the original owner eventually sorted the car by fitting D2HTB's: a bit radical but worked beautifully.

If there is anyone who has had a poor job from PTP in the last 18 months, step forward. Current PTP170's seem universally good - and they come with a warranty.

If you haven't already, worth checking the position taken by your insurance company towards each conversion.

See above for prices from DVA Power - which is the most popular one and represents best value for money?
